Gamers launch a week-long PlayStation boycott on August 23 to protest Sony's 2028 end of physical.

Blackout Kicks Off

On August 23, 2026, PlayStation players are set to begin a week-long blackout protest running through August 30, with participants urged to avoid PSN logins, gameplay sessions, and purchases on all Sony platforms. According to VideoCardz.com, the campaign was started by game preservation group Does It Play following Sony's decision to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games. The protest begins at 7 PM local time on both the start and end dates, and participants are encouraged to turn off their consoles or remain logged out for the full seven days. Tech4Gamers reports that the blackout was announced last month and aims to show Sony that demand for physical games still exists, while also addressing grievances such as recent studio closures and poor communication.

Why Players Are Angry

Sony officially announced on July 1, 2026, that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will no longer receive physical disc versions, according to VideoCardz.com. Retailers will still sell new releases but only in digital formats. GameGPU reports that the policy of switching to digital formats without legal guarantees of preserving ownership has caused particular discontent, along with recent instances of licensed films and television series being removed from users' libraries. According to Audacy, Drexel professor Tony Rowe noted that digital-only games mean consumers cannot loan, sell, or trade in their purchases, leaving them under the whims of publishers. Audacy also reports that Sony recently removed over 500 movies, including Terminator 2: Judgement Day, from users' personal libraries due to a licensing issue with StudioCanal.

Timing Made Worse by ToS Emails

Adding fuel to the fire, Kotaku reports that Sony blasted many PSN users with automated terms of service reminder emails the week before the blackout, including the provision that players do not actually own their digital games. The email stated that the software is licensed, not sold, and grants only a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, personal license. Kotaku notes that while the emails were likely not an intentional taunt, the timing was exceptionally poor given the upcoming protest. According to ComicBook.com, quite a few users confirmed receiving the email, which included reminders about digital licenses versus game ownership and what happens if a PSN account is banned. ComicBook.com also reports that the terms last updated in April 2026 are around 43 pages long and stipulate that suspended accounts may lose access to purchased content.

Industry-Wide Digital Push

Sony is not alone in steering toward an all-digital future. According to Audacy, Microsoft previously announced that its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, will not have a disc drive. Audacy also notes that Microsoft attempted a similar digital restriction in 2013 with the Xbox One, tying games to unique accounts and limiting sharing, before retracting the policy after backlash. Adrian Sandoval, chair of the Philadelphia chapter of the International Game Developers Association, told Audacy that Sony very famously opposed Microsoft's 2013 stance and gained fan excitement as a result, but realistically Sony has wanted to move digital for about the same amount of time. GameGPU reports that Sony management has made clear in financial reports that the current course toward total digitalization will not be revised.

Will the Protest Work?

Opinions remain divided on the blackout's potential impact. According to VideoCardz.com, forum consensus suggests the week-long pause will not change much since nothing major is happening that week, and most agree that canceling PlayStation Plus subscriptions or preorders for major games like GTA 6 would send a clearer message. GameGPU similarly reports skepticism within the community, with some players noting that real financial losses only occur when preorders are canceled and long-term subscriptions are terminated. Tech4Gamers notes that efforts to oppose the disc decision have slowed lately, raising questions about turnout, and that the mainstream audience is likely unaware the boycott is even happening. VideoCardz.com also reports that Sony has stated its plans will move forward regardless of the online backlash.

What Comes Next for Physical Media

The blackout represents the first organized effort to show Sony what the physical game preservation community wants, according to VideoCardz.com. Audacy reports that Tony Rowe, who previously worked at LucasArts and now works with game preservationists, expressed concerns that eliminating physical releases makes preservation work much harder, noting that unlike books and movies there is no standard format for games across generations. Charles Simmons, a quality assurance analyst quoted by Audacy, said the shift also forces retailers like GameStop to evolve their business models, already selling iPads and iPhones alongside game trade-ins. Simmons told Audacy the move is a blow to gaming culture, losing the camaraderie of sharing games with friends. Tech4Gamers reports that PlayStation has yet to acknowledge the backlash and plans to proceed as intended, hoping fans will eventually adapt to the digital-only future.
