Begich Quits Alaska Governor Race, Backs Kreiss-Tomkins

Tom Begich suspended his Democratic gubernatorial campaign and endorsed Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, leaving Democrats consolidated while Republicans.

Former state Senate minority leader Tom Begich announced Friday that he and running mate Julia Hnilicka are suspending their campaign for Alaska governor and endorsing fellow Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, more than a year after Begich entered the race. Begich said he and Hnilicka reviewed their internal data alongside information shared by the Kreiss-Tomkins campaign and concluded that a single Democratic candidate offered the strongest path to winning in November. "Rather than competing over visions that share so much in common, we are choosing to put our strength behind a shared vision for Alaska," Begich said in a statement carried by Alaska's News Source.

The surprise is the asymmetry of consolidation: Democrats now speak with one voice while the Republican lane stays fractured. According to the Washington Examiner, Begich finished second among the top four in the open primary with 20.8% to Kreiss-Tomkins' 22.5%, and his exit leaves Kreiss-Tomkins as the sole Democrat against Republicans Bernadette Wilson and Dave Bronson. Both leading Republicans have said on the record they are staying in. Bronson argued his 8.1%, combined with other Republican candidates, represented roughly 80% of the Republican primary vote, saying Alaskans "deserve a choice," while Wilson called for the party to unite behind her top-finishing ticket.

Unofficial results cited by Alaska's News Source show Kreiss-Tomkins with 36,961 votes (22.52%) and Begich with 34,149 (20.80%), meaning the two Democratic tickets together drew more than 71,000 votes — more than any other single ticket in a 17-ticket field. Statewide turnout was 27.75% of registered voters, with up to 34,000 ballots still uncounted and certification set for Aug. 31. OddsShopper reports that prediction markets moved sharply on the news: Kalshi's contract on Begich becoming governor collapsed from 15¢ to 2¢ before his announcement, while Kreiss-Tomkins' bid climbed to 50¢ by Saturday morning. The outlet's seven-model panel puts Kreiss-Tomkins at 55%, above the market's read.

The election replaces term-limited Gov. Mike Dunleavy, and the ballot shape matters under Alaska's ranked-choice rules. If Begich's voters follow his endorsement, Kreiss-Tomkins inherits a Democratic bloc worth 43.32% of the primary vote combined, per figures reported by OddsShopper. Meanwhile, Republican-labeled tickets took just under half the primary vote spread across a dozen names, with the single best Republican at 10.02% — meaning the GOP's rank-and-file must cross-rank effectively for any one Republican to win. There is also a wrinkle for fifth place: OddsShopper reports that Alaska Public Offices Commission staff recommended Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom not certify Treg Taylor's nomination over an incomplete financial disclosure, which could elevate sixth-place finisher Click Bishop instead.

The candidate withdrawal deadline is Aug. 31, and suspending a campaign is not the same as leaving the ballot — the Division of Elections requires a written withdrawal notice by close of business Monday, according to OddsShopper, which notes Kalshi's separate withdrawal contract closed at 99¢. Full primary results, including outstanding mail-in and questioned ballots, are expected in the coming days per Alaska's News Source. Begich framed the exit as carrying his campaign forward rather than abandoning it: "I am not asking you to forget what we fought for. I am asking you to carry it forward." Hnilicka added, "Our campaign may be ending, but the work is not."
