Time Magazine reports that approximately 3.6 billion people—44.4% of the world's population—will be able to see the event, spanning Europe, Africa, North and South America, and western Asia. The eclipse will be visible across Africa, Europe, parts of Greenland, Antarctica, most of the Americas, and the eastern Pacific Ocean, per EarthSky.

Why 'Partial' Still Means Spectacular
Although classified as a partial eclipse, the event will closely resemble a total lunar eclipse in appearance. EarthSky explains that as the eclipse deepens toward maximum, a red glow should become visible on the moon, with some estimates suggesting the color appears by 90–95% coverage. Since 96% of the moon will be in shadow, viewers may see significant reddening. Time Magazine attributes the autumnal orange-red color to Earth's atmosphere filtering sunlight: shorter blue wavelengths scatter while longer red wavelengths reach the lunar surface. Bristol Live notes that because filtered sunlight can still reach the eclipsed portion, much of the moon could take on the reddish-orange hue associated with a so-called blood moon.

Viewing times vary significantly by location. For the UK, Bristol Live and Wales Online both report that the partial eclipse begins around 3:30 a.m. local time on August 28, with the peak around 5:10 a.m., though the moon will be low in the western sky. TownLift reports that in Utah, the penumbral stage begins around 7:24 p.m. Mountain time, the partial phase starts at approximately 8:34 p.m., maximum occurs near 10:13 p.m., and the partial phase ends around 11:52 p.m. WWMT notes that in West Michigan, the partial eclipse begins around 10:30 p.m. on August 27, with greatest eclipse at 12:13 a.m. on August 28.
The Moon's Cosmic Context
EarthSky reports that the lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is in the constellation of Aquarius the Water Bearer. The eclipse belongs to Saros 138, described by EarthSky as number 29 of 82 lunar eclipses in that series, with all eclipses in the series occurring at the moon's ascending node. The Akron Beacon Journal notes that the August full moon is traditionally called the sturgeon moon, a name originating from Native Americans who associated it with the giant lake sturgeon once abundantly caught in the Great Lakes during August and September. What Comes Next for Skywatchers
According to Time Magazine, the next total lunar eclipse will not occur until December 31, 2027, through January 1, 2028. Bristol Live and Wales Online echo this, noting that the UK will not see another total lunar eclipse until that date. WWMT reports that in West Michigan, the next visible partial lunar eclipse will be in January 2028, with only 7% of the moon in Earth's shadow, and the next total lunar eclipse for Michigan will not arrive until June 2029.
