A judge ordered Michelle Parker's ex-fiancé Dale Smith Jr. held without bond as prosecutors consider upgrading his charge to first-degree murder.

The arrest that took 15 years

On October 14, 2026, Orlando police arrested Dale Smith Jr., 55, at his business and charged him with second-degree murder in the presumed death of Michelle Parker, who vanished on November 17, 2011 after dropping the couple's 3-year-old twins at his home.

Smith was the last known person to see or hear from her, and her body has never been found. Police stated that all evidence leads to Smith as the person responsible for her murder.

Held without bond after first appearance

According to USA Today, Smith made his first court appearance on October 15, where prosecutors argued the seriousness of the charge and the evidence against him warranted holding him without bond, and a judge agreed.

Smith's attorney, Rajan Joshi, asked the court to grant bond, arguing the state had not presented enough evidence to justify keeping him jailed pending trial. Per USA Today, prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to schedule a future hearing on whether bond should be reconsidered.

Smith is now booked in Orange County while awaiting that hearing and trial proceedings.

Why this arrest finally happened

The break came from an expanded investigative team that spent the past year re-examining testimony and conflicting statements, plus advances in digital forensics.

Detective Phillip McMican said Smith gave different answers to the same specific questions across interviews and depositions, and that investigators can now better interpret evidence from vehicles, phones and computers than they could in 2011.

Police declined to disclose specifics, saying they must protect the integrity of the case.

The family's long wait for answers

Parker's mother, Yvonne Stewart, was told of the arrest in person and called it the happiest day, saying she always believed Smith was involved.

Her stepmother, Gayle Shabronsky Parker, told NBC News the family has prayed since day one for answers and hopes a conviction brings justice and leads to finding Michelle. She hopes the arrest will change that.

Stakes: charge could be upgraded

State Attorney Monique H. Worrell said prosecutors could upgrade the charge to first-degree murder if the evidence warrants it, which would raise the stakes considerably for the state and the defense.

Smith, who has denied any involvement for 15 years, maintains his innocence, according to his attorney Rajan Joshi, who told reporters he plans to review the evidence with a fine-tooth comb and wants to see justice done without the wrong person being convicted.

Parker's family continues to hope the prosecution will finally reveal where her remains are.

What comes next for the Parker case

The immediate next steps are the future bond-reconsideration hearing and the state's decisions on charging. Police say they continue to search for Parker's body, and investigators have not publicly stated a motive.

The case also underscores how digital forensics advances have revived cold cases long thought unsolvable.
