Netflix reported box office grosses for the first time ever, with 'La Bola Negra' debuting to a record-adjacent $69,375 per-screen average.

Netflix breaks its own glass: first-ever reported grosses

For the first time in its history, Netflix is reporting box office numbers to the industry.

According to Variety, the streamer disclosed approximately $277,500 from just four screens in New York and Los Angeles for Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's 'La Bola Negra' — a shift after years of leaving trade publications to reconstruct grosses for titles like 'Glass Onion' and 'KPop Demon Hunters' through exhibitor sources.

TheWrap reports the same figures, marking a genuine first for the company's theatrical strategy.

Why the number matters: chasing 'Parasite' into history

The per-theater average of roughly $69,375, according to TheWrap, would be the second-highest ever in the United States for a non-English language film, behind only Bong Joon-ho's Best Picture winner 'Parasite,' which TheWrap credits with a $125,421 record.

Variety reports the same comparison in slightly different terms, citing Parasite's $131,072 average from three theaters — outlets differ on the exact Parasite benchmark, but both place 'La Bola Negra' second only to it. For a four-screen Spanish-language epic, that is landmark company.

The awards machine behind the debut

Both outlets frame the film as a top Best Picture and Best International Feature contender.

Variety notes the Los Javis film received a 16-minute standing ovation at Cannes and won the Toronto International Film Festival's People's Choice Award — a prize Variety describes as an Oscar precursor — while TheWrap records the same TIFF honor and the film's Best Director win at Cannes.

The festival pedigree is precisely why Netflix chose to open it so selectively and, unusually, to let the numbers be seen.

A traditional window from a streamer that avoided them

The theatrical rollout is being handled in a distinctly old-school way.

Variety reports Netflix will keep 'La Bola Negra' in theaters for 45 days before its streaming debut, while TheWrap cites a 47-day window with expansion to San Francisco and Toronto next weekend alongside new New York and Los Angeles locations, building toward an estimated 200 to 300 screens by early November.

Both outlets agree the film streams on December 2 — a rare, fully disclosed plan from a company long associated with collapsing windows.

The weekend's other specialty stakes

The 'La Bola Negra' debut landed in a weekend dominated by A24's 'You Can See Everything,' which Variety reports grossed $15 million from 855 theaters — the biggest documentary opening since 'Fahrenheit 9/11' — while Netflix's measured art-house play shows a different path for prestige titles.
