New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia debuts at Tuesday's briefing as CNN's KFile and NPR detail her deleted posts and conspiracy claims.

A new press secretary takes the podium

The White House ends a weekslong stretch without a permanent press secretary on Tuesday, when Katie Zacharia makes her briefing room debut at 9:30 a.m., succeeding Karoline Leavitt, who left the role on August 27.

Trump announced the appointment on Truth Social, writing that Zacharia had "been with me, in spirit, from the very beginning." The timing is tight: her first briefing falls exactly three weeks before polls close in the 2026 midterms, according to the Washington Examiner.

Why the arrival is surprising

A CNN KFile investigation by Andrew Kaczynski reports that Zacharia repeatedly accused prominent Democrats and Hollywood elites of pedophilia, and that KFile found a trail of deleted posts in which she warned of a GOP midterm "bloodbath," questioned the Trump administration, and called to suspend habeas corpus.

NPR separately reports she amplified claims that Democratic leaders took part in pedophile rings, including a 2022 post describing former chief of staff John Podesta as "Pedo Podesta."

The record behind the promotion

Zacharia, 41, is a Pepperdine Caruso School of Law graduate and attorney who served as a senior communications adviser to Trump Media & Technology Group, the operator of Truth Social, and worked briefly at the Department of Homeland Security under Kristi Noem.

NPR reports she served on the advisory board of an anti-abortion group called The White Rose Resistance, and that in August she argued on Real America's Voice that "toxic feminism" had skewed public views of the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. Trump praised her as a "devoted fan and member of MAGA."

The stakes in the briefing room

Zacharia steps in at a precarious moment for the administration.

According to the Washington Examiner, Trump's approval rating was more than 21 points underwater in the RealClearPolitics average, at 38.1%, and Democrats held an eight-point lead on generic House ballots, plus leads in Senate races in Alaska, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio and Texas.

The White House is also fighting the press corps itself: NBC News reports the Justice Department is investigating the five TV networks in the press pool after the administration barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the grounds, a ban a federal judge has temporarily blocked while the lawsuit proceeds.

A messaging role built for TV

Insiders describe the pick as oriented toward the camera rather than the manager's desk.

The Washington Examiner reports that Trump prioritized on-air appearances over behind-the-scenes management after Leavitt's exit, with one veteran GOP operative saying the president needs "more allies on TV" to defend the administration and frame wins for downballot Republicans.

Zacharia has already been defending Trump's deal to import more than 1.8 million tons of Russian diesel fuel, telling Fox News on Saturday that the president is "delivering what he always does, which are solutions" on gas and grocery prices.

What to watch on Tuesday

The immediate test is whether Zacharia fields questions about the KFile findings and her old posts in her introductory news conference, or sticks to administration talking points on midterms and the diesel deal.

NPR says administration officials, asked for comment on the social media posts, responded by praising Zacharia without addressing them, while FBI director Kash Patel called her "sharp, fearless."

With a Democratic Senate majority potentially able to block nominations and launch investigations, according to the Washington Examiner, her performance at the podium could shape the administration's message through the election's final three weeks.
