Miyoko's recalled 1,304 cases of its European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter in 10 states over E. coli, yeast and mold concerns.

What happened: 1,304 cases pulled in ten states

Prosperity Organic Foods, Inc., the Boise, Idaho-based maker of Miyoko's Creamery products, voluntarily initiated a recall of European Style Salted Plant Milk Butter on September 11, according to the FDA's enforcement report.

The action covers 1,304 cases — 7,824 individual 8-ounce packages, per the New York Post — shipped in six-pack cases.

The FDA formally classified the recall as Class II on October 23, meaning use of the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, with the probability of serious harm considered remote.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, according to USA Today.

How to spot the affected butter

Consumers can identify the recalled product by its UPC 857554005773, lot code 07871 on the primary retail carton (1007871 on the outer shipping case), and a best-by date of November 5, 2026. The butter is perishable and was shipped refrigerated or frozen, according to WPDE.

It was distributed in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Wisconsin, a distribution footprint confirmed by multiple outlets including ABC7 Los Angeles and LiveNOW from FOX.

The recall applies only to this specific lot, not to other Miyoko's Creamery products.

Why the recall was surprising — and how it began

What began as a quality complaint escalated into a potential pathogen scare.

According to the New York Post, the recall began after Massachusetts-based supermarket chain Market Basket notified customers of high yeast levels that did not meet quality standards, and the retailer later updated its September 17 notice to warn the product could also potentially contain E. coli.

Yahoo reports that additional microbiological testing suggested the butter might contain E. coli, a bacteria that can cause foodborne illness.

Miyoko's Creamery told customers on Facebook, per USA Today, that 'We voluntarily recalled a specific lot of European Style Salted Butter after testing identified a potential food-safety concern.'

The health stakes for consumers

E. coli infections can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting, with symptoms beginning several days after exposure, according to the CDC.

Some strains can cause bloody diarrhea and serious complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening condition that can lead to kidney failure. Young children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to severe illness, the CDC says.

Prevention reports that eating mold-contaminated food can also cause shortness of breath, nausea, fever or diarrhea. Most adults recover within five to seven days, according to the New York Post.

What consumers should do now

The FDA did not issue specific consumer instructions in the recall notice, according to WSB-TV, which reports that the agency typically advises throwing the product away or returning it to the place of purchase.

Multiple outlets converge on the same guidance: do not eat the butter, even if it looks and smells normal, and return it to the retailer for a full refund. LiveNOW from FOX reports that customers who have the recalled butter should stop using the product and return it to the store for a refund.

Consumers with questions can contact the FDA at 1-888-463-6332, according to the New York Post and USA Today.

What comes next for Miyoko's and plant-based dairy

The recall is a reputational hit for a brand that positions itself on a clean ingredient profile — 100% vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free, soy-free and non-GMO — and whose salted butter is, per USA Today, the company's 'best-selling, most-awarded product,' made from organic cashew milk.

Miyoko's told customers, per USA Today, that 'We're committed to earning that trust through transparency, product quality and what we put on shelves every day,' and that it worked with retail partners and regulators to remove affected product.

The company, which launched its European-style cultured butter in 2016 after starting with plant-based cheeses in 1990, remains an ongoing recall per ABC7.
