The Broadway revival of 'Chess' will close at the Imperial Theatre on June 21, months ahead of its announced September 13 closing date.

A Sudden Curtain Call at the Imperial

Broadway's revival of Chess will play its final performance at the Imperial Theatre on June 21, according to TicketNews — months earlier than the September 13 end date the production had previously announced.

The musical, starring Aaron Tveit, Nicholas Christopher, and Lea Michele, had also planned to bring in singer and actress Joanna "JoJo" Levesque as Florence Vassy beginning June 23 after Michele's departure; with the new closing notice, TicketNews reports that Levesque's engagement will no longer move forward.

By final curtain, the revival will have played 34 previews and 241 regular performances.

Why the Trimming Matters to Fans

The surprise is the contrast with history: TicketNews notes the revival significantly outlasted the original 1988 Broadway staging of Chess, which closed after just 68 performances.

For fans who had followed casting news, the cancellation of JoJo's Florence Vassy run is the sharpest edge of the news — a much-publicized takeover that will now never happen.

Producers Reflect on a 'Historic' Run

In a joint statement quoted by TicketNews, producers Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, and The Shubert Organization said they were "immensely proud of the extraordinary work this cast and creative team have done in reimagining Chess for a new generation of theatregoers while honoring the passionate fans who have championed this musical for nearly four decades."

The producers added that witnessing Tveit, Michele, and Christopher perform the legendary score alongside a company of Broadway talent is "something that will stay with audiences long after they depart the Imperial Theatre," calling the return "an enormous privilege."

Afterlife on Stage, Across the Atlantic

There is a silver lining elsewhere in the revival economy.

British Theatre reports that the 2016 Falsettos revival cast — Stephanie J. Block, Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Tracie Thoms, Brandon Uranowitz, and Betsy Wolfe — will reunite for three concert performances at the London Palladium on February 23–24, 2027, after a Carnegie Hall reunion grew from one night to three New York dates plus a London trip.

Ticket information for Chess is available at chessbroadway.com, per TicketNews.
