Chad Ryland's 43-yard field goal as time expired gave Arizona an 18-16 upset in Los Angeles, the NFL's biggest upset of the 2026 season.

What happened in Inglewood

The Arizona Cardinals, riding a four-game losing streak after a season-opening win at SoFi Stadium, returned to the same building and beat the Los Angeles Rams 18-16 without scoring a single touchdown.

Chad Ryland kicked his sixth field goal of the day, a 43-yarder as time expired, to complete the win after Jacoby Brissett hit Jalen Brooks for a 21-yard gain and Josh Wallace's unnecessary roughness penalty moved Arizona into range.

The Rams had just taken a 16-15 lead on Matthew Stafford's 5-yard touchdown pass to Colby Parkinson with 47 seconds left, only for the Cardinals to march 36 yards and win on three snaps.

Why the upset is historic

Arizona entered as a 13.5-point underdog, and CBS Sports reports that made this the largest upset of the 2026 season and tied for the largest upset of any NFL game in the past five years. It was also the biggest upset loss of Matthew Stafford's career to date, according to CBS Sports.

The shock deepens because the Cardinals did not reach the end zone — Ryland's six field goals supplied every point — and because the team arrived having been outscored badly, allowing 148 points over its previous four games per ESPN's recap.

Rams offense found nothing explosive

Per CBS Sports, Stafford finished 25-of-33 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, but the day was a slog until the final drive: before that he was 18-of-26 for just 137 yards, was sacked three times and averaged a putrid 4.2 yards per attempt.

He got rid of the ball in 2.50 seconds and averaged only 4.6 yards downfield per throw, with just two passes 20-plus yards — both coming on the last drive.

A failed fourth-and-8 running back screen summed up the disjointed day, and a Tyler Higbee fumble, forced by Cody Simon, killed a drive deep in Arizona territory.

Arizona's plan: ball control and no mistakes

After Brissett's interception on the opening drive, the Rams never forced another takeaway, and CBS Sports notes Los Angeles recorded zero sacks against one of the league's most stationary quarterbacks playing without left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and running back Jeremiyah Love.

ESPN reports Brissett passed for 218 yards and was not sacked after the first possession. Arizona rolled up 338 yards, scored on six of ten drives, and held the ball for nearly 10 more minutes than Los Angeles — enough to keep the NFL's top-ranked offense off the field.

A Super Bowl favorite now in disarray

The Rams fell to 2-4, matching the Cardinals' record, after entering the season as the preseason Super Bowl favorite, with losses by two, three and four points this year — CBS Sports notes special teams problems featured heavily in all three.

New kicker Blake Grupe hurt his knee making a tackle after Devin Duvernay's 40-yard kickoff return, forcing punter Ethan Evans to kick the extra point. The Rams also committed four penalties, including crucial ones by Byron Young, Warren McClendon and Wallace.

McVay, now 2-4, said 'even if we had come away with the result, it's not good enough' and that fixing it 'starts with me,' per ESPN.

What comes next

New Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur, McVay's former offensive coordinator, won his first meeting against his old boss and earned Arizona's second win this season at SoFi Stadium, where the Cards also beat the Chargers in Week 1.

ESPN's recap notes the Cardinals host Denver next Sunday while the Rams travel to Las Vegas.

The loss also raised injury questions: ESPN reports Rams receiver Davante Adams hobbled off favoring his left knee on a noncontact injury after the penultimate offensive play, and McVay gave no postgame update on the six-time Pro Bowler.
