Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has issued one of his starkest warnings yet about artificial intelligence, saying the technology could change the world for the worse for the majority of the global population. According to The News International, Gates told The New York Times that AI poses a grave threat to jobs and human life, and that addressing its risks should become "the world's top priority." The warning comes as Gates also published a lengthy essay calling on the world to prepare for what he termed a turbulent AI era before workers are displaced or underemployed.

What makes Gates' warning remarkable is his deep entrenchment in the very industry he is critiquing. CNBC reports that Gates acknowledged in his essay that he still has financial ties to the tech industry and works with Microsoft and other AI companies through the Gates Foundation. CNBC also notes that as recently as October 2025, Gates told the network that AI was "the biggest technical thing ever in my lifetime." The shift from that enthusiasm to describing innovation as potentially a net negative marks a striking reversal. According to The News International, Gates said the tech industry is knowingly downplaying AI threats because there is too much money on the line.

The most arresting element of Gates' warning is his claim that those closest to the technology are the most frightened. Both The News International and BOL News report Gates telling The New York Times, "In private, people who understand how good this stuff is, and how much better it's getting, they're very worried. But few tech executives are willing to publicly admit that." He added, "I don't like bringing bad news to people, and I don't like saying that innovation may be a net negative. But that's where we are." According to CNBC, Gates wrote in his essay that there is "no plan" for the social, political, and economic upheaval AI is about to cause, saying he sees no evidence that leaders, experts, and communities are confronting the challenges adequately.

CNBC specifies that sales, customer support, software engineering, and paralegal work could be among the first areas hit, with AI eventually taking on tasks like assessing loans, analyzing data, and triaging patients. Business Insider reports that Gates warned blue-collar workers will also face pressure as humanoid robots become cheaper and more capable, potentially competing on physical tasks in construction and hospitality by the end of the decade. According to Business Insider, Gates proposed that society may decide to set aside certain work for people only, a concept he calls "Human Reserved." He gave the example of receiving an incurable disease diagnosis from a robot, writing, "There's no technical reason why it couldn't. Yet it shouldn't." Business Insider also reports that Gates called for taxing AI tokens and robots to slow the push to replace workers and fund retraining, noting that the current tax system nudges companies toward automation because employers pay payroll taxes for people while robots can be written off as business expenses. According to CNBC, Gates wrote that even a country that gets its own house in order will still be exposed to risks that cross borders, which is why an international organization will need to be built in parallel. He suggested such agencies could be modeled on existing systems like the global inspections regime for nuclear weapons, regulations for international aviation, and agreements that protect the ozone layer. CNBC also reports that Gates said AI could accelerate innovation in the world's toughest technical challenges, including providing reliable clean energy, combating climate change, growing enough food, and eradicating diseases. He characterized AI as potentially either the greatest equalizer ever invented or the worst source of injustice. Business Insider quotes Gates writing, "Waiting until people are already displaced or underemployed will be too late. AI is a structural challenge to the way our economy is organized, and it requires thinking and action now."
