Met Gala's 2027 theme is 'extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of Everyday,' announced weeks after the John Galliano retrospective was cancelled.
The Met Reveals a New Theme on Short Notice
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala theme: 'extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of Everyday.'
CBS New York reports the show will explore how designers rework familiar garments, everyday objects and commonplace materials — from jeans, T-shirts and puffer coats to paper, plastic and metal. The gala is set for Monday, May 3, with the exhibition running May 9 through January 9, 2028.
Organizers say the theme will expand on the current 'Costume Art' exhibit, which places the dressed body at the center of aesthetic experience.
Why the Pivot Is a Real Reversal
The surprise for devoted followers is how quickly the Met changed course.
The spring show was originally announced as 'John Galliano: Horizons,' a retrospective on the British designer, but it came under fire almost immediately — The Journal reports backlash from donors and political figures over Galliano's past antisemitic remarks, and Zoom TV adds that New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin had objected to the timing coinciding with Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Less than a month after the announcement, Galliano and the museum scrapped the project, leaving curator Andrew Bolton to build a new concept on short notice.
The Evidence: Everyday Objects, Rare Loans
According to Zoom TV, Bolton drew inspiration from the attachments people form with clothing, and has even floated encouraging guests to wear their own everyday staples.
The show will mix permanent-collection pieces with loans and new acquisitions, including a 1930s Charles James puffer coat on loan from London's Victoria and Albert Museum, a Norma Kamali 'sleeping bag coat,' and the Calvin Klein jeans Brooke Shields wore in her controversial 1980s campaign.
CBS New York quotes Bolton: 'The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears... Designers work with that familiarity, revealing unexpected possibilities within forms and materials we think we already know.'
Galliano's Account of the Fallout
The Journal reports that Galliano, 65, wrote on Instagram: 'After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.'
He added that he remains 'fully accountable' for the pain caused by his words, particularly to the Jewish and Asian communities.
The outlet notes he was convicted by a French court in 2011 for racist and antisemitic comments at a Paris bar, fired from Dior, and later spent a decade at Maison Margiela before leaving in 2024.
What Comes Next for the Gala
The Met has yet to announce the gala's dress code or celebrity hosts, though CBS New York notes the code is typically tied to the theme — last year's was 'Fashion is Art,' based on 'Costume Art.'
The gala funds the Costume Institute's exhibits, acquisitions and operations; The Journal reports last year's event drew a reported $10 million sponsorship from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, with Amazon, Meta, OpenAI and Snapchat each buying $350,000 tables.
Zoom TV adds the Costume Institute is preparing for its 80th anniversary, with the new show expected to help diversify the collection.
