The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6-powered RedMagic 12 Pro reportedly became the first Snapdragon Android phone to run Android's Linux Terminal.
A Snapdragon Phone Finally Opens the Linux Door
The RedMagic 12 Pro has reportedly become the first Snapdragon-based Android phone to support Android's Linux Terminal, according to a 9to5Google report dated November 4, 2026 that shattered.io cites in its analysis.
The feature debuted in Android 16 on Pixel phones as a power-user tool that runs a Linux environment in a virtual machine alongside Android. Until now, it stayed mostly out of reach for owners of Qualcomm-powered hardware, which dominates the premium Android market outside Google's own Pixel range.
According to shattered.io, the feature appeared after being switched on and compatibility commands were run on the device, meaning it did not ship as a polished, promoted feature.
Why the First Claims a Capability, Not a Promise
The distinction matters: a feature that works after manual setup is a capability signal, not a product promise, shattered.io notes.
The Android Virtualization Framework requires support for non-protected virtual machines, so the silicon, bootloader, hypervisor and vendor's Android build all have to expose the right capabilities — if any link is missing, the terminal never starts.
One working phone does not mean every Snapdragon phone will follow, since each manufacturer controls its own firmware.
There is also no on-record statement from RedMagic, Qualcomm or Google confirming the 'first' designation, and Samsung phones already received major Linux Terminal upgrades via One UI 8.5 per Android Authority.
Inside the Phone: Gaming Specs That Suit Linux
The RedMagic 12 Pro packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 with Oryn CPU cores clocked up to 5.0GHz, per pokde.net's Malaysia launch coverage.
Its AquaCore Cooling System 3.0 pairs dual-loop liquid cooling with a 25,500 RPM blower fan, an enhanced vapor chamber and Liquid Metal 4.0 — traits that also suit virtual machines needing steady CPU time and plenty of RAM.
The 6.85-inch 1.5K BOE display runs at 185Hz with a ninth-generation under-display camera, and the 8,400mAh battery charges at 80W wired and wireless. RedMagic's global site lists the phone from $899 with 12GB or 16GB RAM and up to 1TB storage.
What Developers Can Try Next
For developers, a phone-sized Linux box can run shell scripts away from a desk, host a lightweight web server, handle SSH sessions and quick edits, shattered.io suggests.
According to 9to5Google, the Terminal defaulted to 1GB of memory on the RedMagic 12 Pro but allowed increases up to 10.6GB, while Terminal storage was locked at 132GB.
The report cautions that a larger memory allocation leaves less RAM for Android, so owners should raise it in steps and test workloads first.
In Malaysia, the phone goes on sale November 10, 2026 at 8pm from RM4,499 for the 12+256GB model, RM4,999 for 16+512GB and RM5,899 for 16GB+1TB, in Nightfreeze and Subzero transparent finishes.
