Skydance closed its $110 billion Warner Bros. Discovery merger Tuesday, with HBO Max and Paramount+ set to unify into one streaming service.

The Merger Closes and One Super-App Is Confirmed

Paramount Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has been finalized, and assets from both companies are now held by a combined company called Skydance, PCMag reports. In a press release on Tuesday, Skydance confirmed that the streaming services it now owns — Paramount+, HBO Max and Discovery+ — will eventually be unified into a single service, promising consumers "significant improvements to its direct-to-consumer streaming products." Celebitchy notes the deal closed after unanimous approval from competition authorities covering nearly 70 jurisdictions worldwide.

Why This One Stuns the Streaming World

The surprise is the sheer scale and drama behind the close. According to Celebitchy, Skydance outbid Netflix to take over Warner Bros. Discovery back in February, and because closing slipped six days past September 30, Paramount had to pay an extra $7 million a day in ticking fees — $42 million added to the $110 billion deal. Celebitchy also reports David Ellison now carries roughly $80 billion of debt, and expects swift layoffs and production cuts to bring that figure down.

A Single App for Potter, Rings, DC and SpongeBob

PCMag highlights what fans may actually get: the possibility of Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, the DC Universe, Mission: Impossible, Transformers and SpongeBob SquarePants all hosted on a single platform. The combined company brings together two major film studios, streaming services with over 200 million subscribers globally, and cable networks including CNN, CBS, HBO, MTV, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. Both outlets note the merger was challenged in July by a coalition of 12 states over possible antitrust violations.

Timeline and Pricing: Bundles First, One App Later

Do not expect an immediate switch. PCMag reports that CEO David Ellison told a press meet the unified service "will take a period of time," with bundles set to roll out first. For now, subscription plans for Paramount+ and HBO Max start at $8.99 and $10.99 per month respectively, per PCMag. The open questions Celebitchy flags are thorny too: whether the combined app will honor existing cable subscriptions that include HBO Max, and what the eventual combined price will be.

While Giants Merge, Fandom Channels Multiply

The consolidation news lands just as the opposite trend accelerates in the niche streaming market. Per PR Newswire, Cineverse announced the addition of SVOD access to its horror service SCREAMBOX and its romance-driven Dove Channel on DIRECTV, with SCREAMBOX featuring titles like Black Christmas, Terrifier 2 and 3 and the BBC series Bedlam and Being Human. Cineverse SVP Alexandra Viglione said fandom-driven channels "drive real engagement, subscriptions, and revenue for our distribution partners, while discouraging churn."

What Comes Next for Streamers and Subscribers

Expect the next year to test both models at once. Meanwhile, Telecompaper reports Canal Plus launched Sport+, a free streaming service dedicated to sports for non-subscribers in France, designed for mobile screens with vertical videos and short formats — a sign the post-cable bundle wars will be fought from both ends. Fans should watch for the first HBO Max–Paramount+ bundle pricing announcements.
