World of Reel reports Sony has stopped tracking Taika Waititi's 'Klara and the Sun,' which averaged just $17 per theater in its third weekend.

Sony Pulls the Plug on Its Own Box Office Numbers

World of Reel reports that Taika Waititi's 'Klara and the Sun' is heading into its third weekend with Sony no longer publishing box office figures for the title.

According to the outlet, the film has scraped together roughly $1.2 million domestically, and Showbiz411's Roger Friedman says it averaged a dismal $17 per theater across only a handful of venues — a number World of Reel stresses is not a typo.

The film debuted at No. 15 with $720,000 in fewer than 1,000 locations, then collapsed to $145,000 in its second weekend, at which point Sony stopped reporting and restricted the international rollout.

World of Reel also notes the budget is contested: Sony originally pegged it at $20 million, but it is now being reported at $40 million, and the outlet says it bets on the higher figure given how studios lowball costs.

Waititi Torches the Critics as Reviews Hit Career Low

The collapse triggered what World of Reel calls a meltdown. On Halloween, Waititi posted the film's Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 78% and attacked the critical establishment, asking followers to spare a thought for the 'sad lost souls' who failed to become artists and became critics.

He claimed they were the same people who hated 'Jojo Rabbit' before dismissing them as 'Irrelevant. Out of touch.

Obsolete. In the bin.'

World of Reel counters that the Popcornmeter score he waved around was based on a mere 100-plus verified ratings, while critics have the film at a dismal 26% — the worst-reviewed movie of Waititi's career.

The outlet argues that after 'Thor: Love and Thunder' and 'Next Goal Wins,' this is the third dud in a row for a filmmaker who was recently an Oscar winner with a blank check, and that attacking critics will not help him finance the next one.

Sony's Rough October, Saved Only by Spider-Man

For Sony, World of Reel frames 'Klara' as another October surprise in the worst possible way, noting the studio's Aaron Sorkin film 'The Social Reckoning' flopped with a $5.5 million opening and was pulled from nearly 2,000 North American theaters within weeks.

The outlet says 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' now the third-highest-grossing movie in history, will offset some of the losses, but calls Waititi the big loser.

The contrast with what is coming is stark: Box Office Theory's long-range forecasts, as of October 29, peg Thanksgiving releases far higher, with 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' forecast at a $116 million pinpoint three-day opening and a $319 million domestic total, and Disney's 'Hexed' at $34.5 million opening and $151 million total.

The Crowded Holiday Slate 'Klara' Never Stood to Join

The flop lands just as the holiday corridor fills up.

AOL, citing Deadline, reports that Universal and Paramount's 'Focker-in-Law,' starring Ariana Grande, Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller, is tracking toward a $40 million to $50 million five-day Thanksgiving opening — encouraging, but well below the $112.5 million domestic debut and $764 million worldwide gross of 2024's 'Wicked.'

AOL also cites Box Office Pro's estimate of $35 million to $45 million over three days for Disney's 'Hexed,' and notes 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' arrives November 20 with an estimated $80 million to $100 million opening, ahead of the November 25 Thanksgiving competition.

In that environment, a prestige adaptation hemorrhaging screens after two weekends illustrates how little room there is for films that do not open strongly.
