Taylor Swift performed 'The Fate of Ophelia' live for the first time at the Academy Museum Gala as Oscar buzz builds for her Toy Story 5 song.
A Surprise Set Under the Museum Dome
Taylor Swift closed the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures' sixth annual gala in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 17 with a four-song set, per Billboard and Rolling Stone's syndicated Yahoo report.
Introduced by Conan O'Brien beneath the museum's glass dome — which USA Today places on the Dolby Family Terrace — she opened with 'Blank Space' before telling the A-list crowd, 'This song, which we are playing for the very first time for you beautiful people, this is called The Fate of Ophelia.'
Billboard reports she wore a shimmering midnight-blue gown for the performance, after walking the red carpet in a pale blue Dior gown.
Video: O'Brien's Beatles Introduction
The viral moment turned on the introduction itself. According to USA Today and Stereogum, O'Brien — who voices Smarty Pants in Toy Story 5 — called Swift 'John, Paul, George and Ringo all in one' before her set.
Clips shared online, which Deadline Hollywood says came from Danny Rameriz and Chrissy Teigen's Instagram accounts, show 'Heated Rivalry' star Connor Storrie and Rosé dancing to 'Blank Space' as celebrities sang along.
Page Six notes the gala is nicknamed the 'Met Gala of the West,' and videos from inside the event quickly spread across social platforms.
Why the Debut Is a Big Deal for Fans
The surprise is the scale of the song's delayed live arrival. Billboard notes 'The Fate of Ophelia,' from the 2025 album 'The Life of a Showgirl,' spent 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 — the longest-running No. 1 single of Swift's career — yet had never been performed publicly before Saturday.
Billboard also reports it was her first public performance since her August Grammy Museum appearance, and that since ending the Eras Tour in December 2024, Rolling Stone says she has only played handfuls of celebrity-filled events rather than full shows.
The Stakes: An Oscar Play in October
The timing is not accidental, outlets suggest.
Billboard says 'I Knew It, I Knew You,' her Toy Story 5 song, is generating buzz as a best original song contender — her 15th Hot 100 chart-topper, Disney's third No. 1 and a first for Pixar, per USA Today, which adds Swift has never received an Oscar nomination despite past soundtrack work.
Page Six notes her last major appearance was September's VMAs, where she became the show's most-awarded artist.
A $14 Million Night Honoring Theron, Domingo, Carpenter
Variety reports the gala raised more than $14 million and honored Charlize Theron with the Icon Award, Colman Domingo with the Vantage Award and John Carpenter with the Luminary Award.
According to Variety, the event was presented by Rolex and co-chaired by Robert Rodriguez, Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw and Tom Ford, with a red carpet crowded with stars from Sabrina Carpenter and Jacob Elordi to Kim Kardashian and Rosé.
USA Today adds that Spielberg, a co-chair, had honored Swift himself in June when he inducted her into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
What Comes Next for Swift
Rolling Stone reports Swift, an avowed film fan, is reportedly working on a feature-length directorial debut announced in 2022, with no word yet on production or release.
USA Today says Academy shortlists arrive December 15, which will show whether 'I Knew It, I Knew You' advances toward a nomination on January 21, 2027. Meanwhile, Billboard notes she attended the gala solo as her husband Travis Kelce prepared for the Chiefs' game against the Chargers on Sunday.
TMZ observed she turned the fundraiser into what it called her own private concert for Hollywood's biggest names.
