Other Mommy' debuted No. 1 with a D+ CinemaScore — the lowest audience grade since 'Megalopolis' — heading toward a $28 million opening.

A No. 1 Opening Audiences Hate

Universal/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster's 'Other Mommy' claimed the top spot this weekend, earning a $13 million opening day from 3,365 screens per TheWrap, which Yahoo/Variety puts at $12.6 million. The Jessica Chastain horror, based on Josh Malerman's novel 'Incidents Around the House,' is estimated for a $28 million weekend. But reception is dismal across the board: TheWrap cites a 20% critics score and 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, plus a D+ CinemaScore.

Lowest Grade Since 'Megalopolis'

Here is the record that film fans will talk about: TheWrap reports the D+ is the lowest CinemaScore handed out since audiences gave Francis Ford Coppola's 'Megalopolis' a D+ in September 2024. For a wide-release horror film produced on what TheWrap calls a $19 million budget and what Yahoo/Variety puts at $18 million, such a score is unusually toxic — a D+ typically signals audience rejection that kills word of mouth.

Reviewers Split From the Crowd

Critics are not uniformly in step with the grade. The People's Movies praises Rob Savage's film as 'unlike anything I have seen before,' lauding Chastain's dual turn as mother Ursula and the entity that wears her face, and awarding three stars. Yahoo/Variety notes the genre's 2026 box-office reign — following 'Obsession,' 'Backrooms' and 'Resident Evil' — as the context for a Halloween-timed release that still drew a crowd despite the rancor.

The Numbers Behind the Debut

Yahoo/Variety reports Chastain plays Ursula opposite Jay Duplass and young Arabella Olivia Clark as daughter Bela, with Karen Allen, Dichen Lachman and Arian Moayed in the cast. The Friday figures put it well ahead of the weekend's other new wide release: 'The Social Reckoning' took just $2.15 million from 2,606 theaters, per Yahoo/Variety, toward an estimated $6 million opening.

What a D+ Does to the Legs

TheWrap argues the poor reception 'is likely to take out the film's legs and could affect even Saturday and Sunday turnout,' warning that Monday actuals could land closer to $20 million. Still, on either budget figure cited, the film should clear break-even by the end of its run.

The Rest of a Slow Weekend

TheWrap notes overall weekend estimates are slipping below $90 million for the second straight week. Last week's No. 1, Amazon MGM's 'Verity,' fell 61% to $12.5 million, bringing its 10-day total to $54.8 million. Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu's 'Digger' managed just $3 million in its second weekend, a 10-day total of $14 million that TheWrap calls a descent toward one of the worst box-office bombs of all time.
