HBO greenlights a five-episode 'Girls' revival reuniting Lena Dunham with Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells in 2027.
A Voice of a Generation Comes Back
HBO has greenlit a limited revival of Lena Dunham's 'Girls', the dramedy that ran on the network from 2012 to 2017. According to Variety, the comeback will be a five-episode run with production beginning in 2027 — a full decade after the Season 6 finale.
All four core cast members return: Dunham as Hannah Horvath, Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro, with Andrew Rannells reprising Elijah Krantz.
Judd Apatow returns as executive producer alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen.
Why the Reversal Is Surprising
The surprise is that Dunham said for years she would only revive the show for a specific story worth telling.
In a statement reported by the Associated Press, she said she missed the characters but long struggled to picture them in the present day — until 'right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower.'
The AP notes the show was both a touchstone and a lightning rod during its run, with vocal haters often louder than devotees, yet affection has surged in the decade since, especially among younger viewers who now treat it as aspirational and endlessly quotable.
The Announce Video and What Dunham Joked
The returning cast appeared together in a video announcing the reunion, and The Sun reports Dunham joked in it: 'Can we still call it Girls?
Because we're like old as f***.' HBO programming executive Amy Gravitt said in a statement, cited by Variety, that turning the gaze 'from the tumult of one's twenties to the milestone of turning 40' comes as the world has changed since fans last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah — but the characters are still recognizably the 'Girls' audiences knew.
The Notable Absences: Driver and Konner
Empire reports his absence follows claims Dunham made in her April 2026 memoir 'Famesick', where she alleged Driver was 'verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing', including throwing a chair at a wall beside her.
Former co-showrunner Jenni Konner is also absent after the relationship soured, according to Variety's account of the memoir.
What the Characters Would Be Doing Now
Variety reports Dunham has mused openly about where her characters landed: Shoshanna married and divorced the mayor of New York City and runs a zero-waste athleisure startup; Marnie is on her third marriage and still sings; Jessa is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia; Ray is on city council and running his coffee shop.
Hannah, Dunham says, teaches at Bard, is raising her son, and is 'less obsessed with being famous.' These sketches are Dunham's own interpretive musings rather than confirmed plot details — no premiere date has been announced.
The Stakes for HBO's New Era
The revival carries symbolic weight beyond nostalgia: the AP reports it is among the first production announcements made by HBO since parent company Warner Bros. Discovery was taken over by Skydance-owned Paramount.
The original series earned 19 Emmy nominations and two wins, and Variety in 2023 named it among the greatest TV shows ever, calling it a counterpoint to 'Sex and the City' that traded aspiration for closely observed cringe.
With shooting due to begin in 2027, Empire notes it may not be long before the self-proclaimed 'voice of a generation' and friends are chewing the fat once again.
