Bose Returns to Wired Earbuds After 11 Years, $99 ANC

Bose launched its first wired earbuds since 2015, a $99 USB-C pair with battery-free active noise cancellation, chasing a Gen Z wired revival.

On September 28, Bose announced the Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds, its first wired headphones since 2015. Instead of a 3.5mm headphone jack, they connect via a plug-and-play USB-C cable on a 4.2-foot cord, drawing both audio and power from the connected device. That means no battery to charge, no charging case, no app to download, and no Bluetooth pairing. They come in black, white smoke, and a limited-edition dewdrop mint colorway, with IPX4 water resistance and multiple eartip and stabilizer sizes in the box.

Bose spent a decade pushing wireless hardware, so reviving a dormant wired category is a genuine reversal. The pivot came from an unlikely observation: Bose president of consumer audio Raza Haider noticed wired earbuds everywhere among college students while dropping his teen off at school. WIRED reports the idea-to-final-product cycle took just eight or nine months, far faster than typical audio launches, as Bose rushed to catch the trend before it faded. WIRED's early impressions of a late-stage prototype found the earbuds leapfrog cheaper wired pairs like Apple EarPods in sound quality and noise canceling, though the weighted inline control panel pulls on the cable and the thick cord tangles in the included pouch.

Wired headphone sales went into 2026 up for the first time in five years, with a 10 percent spike in the back half of 2025 accelerating to a 20 percent increase at the start of 2026, figures corroborated by WIRED and Hypebeast. Techgenyz, citing Circana data, reports full-year wired revenue grew just 3 percent in 2025 after five consecutive years of decline before the sharper July-December turnaround. Tom's Guide adds that a Coherent Market Insights study projects premium wired headphones will make up more than 50 percent of headphone sales this year, helped by better sound quality, zero latency, and reliability, alongside celebrity appearances and a pushback against AI-driven digital life.

The core contradiction — wired yet noise canceling — is solved by USB-C power delivery. According to Techgenyz, Bose's QuietControl technology uses four microphones, two in each earbud, to monitor and reduce surrounding sound, while a separate microphone on the inline remote handles voice pickup. Three listening modes are toggled from physical buttons: Quiet Mode to block distractions, Aware Mode to stay tethered to surroundings, and ANC Off, which still uses USB digital audio and Bose DSP. Playback output is fixed at 24-bit/48 kHz under the USB Audio Class 2 standard. Because everything is digital USB-C, ordinary 3.5mm analog adapters, in-flight entertainment jacks, and conventional DACs or headphone amplifiers will not work with them.

Morning Brew reports testers celebrated the more durable cord and good audio quality but found the noise canceling slightly less impressive than other Bose devices, while praising the pair as among the best wired headphones on the market — notable given they cost far more than the sub-$30 price typical for such products. WIRED's hands-on noted the central control panel's weight adds annoying cable tension compared to wireless earbuds. Techgenyz argues that removing the battery eliminates the component most prone to degradation, though the fixed cable and integrated electronics remain potential long-term failure points. WIRED also notes the trend extends beyond Bose, with picks like the Sennheiser IE200 and $20 Final E500 showing wired earbuds never truly went away.

Tom's Guide notes analysts see the trend as partly consumers trading down to lower-cost, lower-spec alternatives, which makes Bose's premium positioning a gamble. The immediate test is commercial: preorders are open now at Bose and Best Buy, with shipping starting around October 13-15, 2026 depending on the retailer listing. If the earbuds land well, expect faster wired revisions and collaborations from Bose's newly accelerated development pipeline.
