The Arizona Cardinals officially traded Marvin Harrison Jr. and a 2027 seventh-rounder to Houston for second- and sixth-round picks on Sunday.
The trade is done: Harrison heads to Houston
The Arizona Cardinals have completed the trade of third-year wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Houston Texans, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter. Arizona sends Harrison and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Houston in exchange for a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. The deal was announced during the Cardinals' Sunday game against the Detroit Lions, a game Harrison was inactive for because a trade was being finalized. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the move after Houston's 26-3 win over the Titans: "Yes, we traded for Marvin Harrison."
A stunning fall for a former No. 4 pick
Harrison entered the NFL with Hall of Fame heritage and sky-high expectations after Ohio State, but his Arizona tenure never launched. Per CBS Sports Research, he is the first wide receiver since Ahmad Rashad in 1974 to be traded within his first three seasons after being selected in the top five, and the fifth top-5 pick traded before year four in the past decade. His production cratered in 2026: five catches on 13 targets for 85 yards and one touchdown through four games, with Trey McBride, Michael Wilson, Kendrick Bourne, Jeremiyah Love and Tyler Allgeier all ahead of him in receptions.
Stroud reunion is the engine of the deal
The Texans pursued Harrison largely because of his connection with quarterback C.J. Stroud, his Ohio State teammate in 2021 and 2022. Per CBS Sports, Harrison set or tied career highs with 77 catches, 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2022 with Stroud at the helm, and Texans Wire notes the pair combined for 88 catches, more than 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns in two seasons. Stroud said Harrison is "a great guy, a great player," and that a fresh start can be really good.
Why Houston needed him now
Houston sits at 1-4 after Sunday's first win, but the Texans had long lacked a reliable second target opposite two-time Pro Bowler Nico Collins. Second-year receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending torn ACL before the season, per Sports Illustrated, and the August trade for Kayshon Boutte has yielded just 12 catches for 153 yards, according to Yahoo Sports. Tank Dell has not played since a catastrophic knee injury in Week 16 of the 2024 season. Harrison remains on his rookie deal through 2027, with Houston holding a fifth-year option for 2028.
The experts split on the grades
Grades across outlets diverged sharply. ESPN's Seth Walder gave the Texans a C+ and the Cardinals an A-, arguing second-round picks have real value for a receiver averaging 1.5 yards per route run. CBS Sports scored it C- for Houston and B+ for Arizona, while The Athletic's Jeff Howe handed out B and A. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox graded the Texans B+ and the Cardinals B, calling it a smart gamble, but USA Today's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz gave Houston a D, writing that "the whiff of desperation here is undeniable."
What comes next
Harrison joins the Texans ahead of their Week 6 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, per Texans Wire. For Arizona, the second-round pick could be valuable as the Cardinals consider pursuing a quarterback in the 2027 draft, per Bleacher Report, and Michael Wilson is established as the No. 1 receiver after his three-year, $75 million extension. Yahoo Sports reports Arizona already paid Harrison his $22.5 million signing bonus, and whichever team acquired him had to decide on his fifth-year option this offseason. Harrison reportedly hired agents in late September to navigate a possible trade.
