Arizona is completing a deal to move its former No. 4 pick, with the receiver inactive Sunday and the acquiring team still unnamed.
The trade that broke without a destination
The Arizona Cardinals are finalizing a trade of wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Saturday. The team informed Harrison on Saturday morning that he will be inactive for Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions as the details of the deal are worked out. Remarkably, neither insider could name the acquiring team — Rapoport and Schefter reported only that the Houston Texans are a team that has had trade talks about the third-year receiver. Sports Illustrated noted the oddity of the news dropping the day before a game with no landing spot attached.
What Arizona is asking for
The Cardinals reportedly were seeking a second-round draft pick and more for Harrison, according to the nfl.com report. heavy.com adds that Tom Pelissero reported league sources saying Arizona wants at least a second-rounder plus additional compensation — a steep price for a receiver who has not produced like a first-rounder.
Why the fourth overall pick is on the move
Harrison was drafted No. 4 overall in 2024 out of Ohio State, but his production has cratered: just five receptions on 13 targets for 85 yards and a touchdown through four games this season, per nfl.com. For his career he has 108 catches for 1,578 yards and 13 touchdowns in 33 games. Yahoo Sports notes a strong rookie year — 62 catches, 885 yards and eight touchdowns — was followed by a second season limited to 12 games. Sports Illustrated reports the Cardinals face a projected fully guaranteed fifth-year option of roughly $20 million next offseason, and that Harrison's drop and concentration issues were a recurring theme.
Colts out, Texans and Raiders hovering
The Indianapolis Colts had been speculated as a potential landing spot because Harrison's father, Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison, starred in Indianapolis from 1996 to 2008 — but ESPN reported Indy is not involved in trade talks, a point heavy.com also attributes to Colts reporter Stephen Holder. The Texans remain squarely in the mix per Schefter and Rapoport's reporting, with one Houston source saying they could 'not confirm or deny at this time,' per heavy.com. heavy.com also reports Raiders coach Klint Kubiak answered 'All things are considered' when asked about adding a receiver amid injuries to Jalen Nailor and Jack Bech.
The backlash over a vague bombshell
Schefter's initial report named no trade partner, and The Big Lead reports he was roasted on X for it, with fans accusing him of racing to be first on a deal whose destination was unknown. Jokes included 'No way you were this horny to be the first one to break the news that you announced a trade without knowing the team he's going to.' Schefter later tweeted that Houston had been in talks.
What comes next
ET kickoff. The Athletic's Sam Warren, via heavy.com, asked whether Las Vegas or another suitor would instead wait on a wider receiver market: FOX Sports' Ralph Vacchiano reports Brian Thomas Jr., Chris Godwin Jr., Quentin Johnston and Jerry Jeudy could also hit the trade block before the November 10 deadline, some for Day 3 picks. For Arizona, Burn City Sports frames the move as a reset built around committed investments in Trey McBride and Michael Wilson.
