Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson mocked TikTok's plastic wrap 'makeup prep' hack in an Allure video, as a dermatologist warned it risks breakouts.

The Hack That Made Hollywood Say 'What Is Wrong With People?'

While promoting their thriller *Verity*, Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson appeared on Allure's YouTube channel to react to trending beauty clips, and one technique stopped them cold.

The video showed a TikTok trend dubbed the "makeup meal prep" hack, popularised by UK-based beauty creator Sam Begum, in which users map foundation, concealer, blush and bronzer onto a sheet of plastic wrap the night before, then press the sheet against their face the next morning to transfer the products.

Johnson's reaction was immediate: "What is wrong with people?" Hathaway, visibly bewildered, admitted she did not understand the method at all.

Both outlets in our source pack describe the same candid, unimpressed response from the two stars, making this a rare moment of A-list consensus against a viral routine.

'Why Does This Save You Time?' — The Logic Problem

Hathaway's sharpest question cut to the trend's entire premise: "Why does this save you time?"

As Mathrubhumi English explains, the hack moves base makeup application to the previous evening, but the transferred products land in uneven patches that still need substantial blending with a brush or sponge, plus setting powder to finish.

Hathaway made the same point, noting the unblended foundation and blush patches would still have to be worked in, so the routine simply spreads effort across two separate days rather than eliminating steps.

Mathrubhumi English adds hygiene concerns: leaving makeup on a plastic sheet overnight may expose it to dust or contamination, and the method is no substitute for clean tools and following product instructions.

Johnson's alternative advice, per the outlets, was to put the phone away and go for a walk or read a book instead.

A Dermatologist's Warning: Occlusion Has Real Costs

The Indian Express spoke to Dr Chytra Anand, a dermatologist at SKINQ, who does not recommend deliberately occluding the skin with plastic wrap as a routine practice.

She explains that plastic wrap creates an occlusive environment, trapping heat, sweat, sebum and product residue against the skin — a particular concern for people with oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin, since prolonged occlusion may contribute to clogged pores, breakouts and irritation.

She further warns that layering multiple skincare and cosmetic products underneath can alter how ingredients interact with or penetrate the skin, potentially raising the likelihood of sensitivity or inflammation, and that anyone with a compromised skin barrier may be more prone to redness, itching, burning or irritation.

The Stakes: Viral Glow Versus Evidence-Led Skincare

Both outlets frame this as more than celebrity comedy. Dr Anand told The Indian Express that an instant cosmetic glow does not translate into healthier skin, and that the priority should always be maintaining a healthy skin barrier with products suited to an individual's skin type.

"Evidence-led skincare, consistent routines and products formulated with skin health in mind are far more reliable than experimenting with techniques simply because they are viral," she cautioned, adding that what works visually in a social media video may not be safe, suitable or beneficial for every skin type.

With Hathaway and Johnson's reactions already circulating, the plastic wrap hack faces sceptics it has yet to convince — and beauty readers now have both celebrity and dermatological backing for skipping it.
