Israeli Drone Strike Kills Two in Gaza City Ceasefire Violation

An Israeli drone strike on a vehicle in Gaza City's Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood killed two Palestinians and wounded 13, as daily ceasefire violations continue.

An Israeli drone fired at least two missiles at a vehicle travelling through the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood of western Gaza City on Sunday, setting it ablaze and mangling its body, according to witness accounts gathered by the Anadolu Agency and Daily Sabah. The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed the casualty figures in a brief statement reported by Middle East Eye. Health officials said the blast dismembered the bodies of the deceased, and they appealed to the public for information that could help identify them. The Israeli military confirmed the strike, saying it targeted two members of Hamas's military wing whom it identified as Hassan Ali Abu Nada and Abd al-Rahim Ahmad Khalil Khawa, alleged members of the engineering unit. IMEMC News separately identified the slain Palestinians as Mahmoud Hussein Abu Nada and Abdul-Rahman Ahmad Hoor.

The strike is the latest in a wave of near-daily Israeli attacks that have continued despite the US-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 11, 2025. According to Gaza's health ministry, as reported by The Guardian and IMEMC News, 1,369 Palestinians have been killed and 4,627 wounded since the truce began, while recovery crews have retrieved 831 bodies from the rubble. Al Jazeera reported a figure of more than 1,300 killed, with health authorities attributing the deaths to Israeli attacks across the territory. Hamas accuses Israel of violating the ceasefire and obstructing US President Donald Trump's plan to end the war, which includes an eventual Israeli withdrawal from the enclave and the disarmament of Hamas. Israel, for its part, says Hamas has been violating the deal, Reuters reported via Arab News. The Israeli military says four of its soldiers have been killed in the same period. Daily Sabah reported that the truce halted large-scale fighting but has not ended Israeli strikes, with little progress toward permanent peace.

The Guardian reports that Gaza's health ministry counted at least 10 Palestinians killed and 56 wounded in Israeli attacks over the previous 48 hours, amid artillery shelling and gunfire across northern, central, and southern Gaza. Among the dead was Iman Shalouf, a 27-year-old woman nearly eight months pregnant, who was shot in the head while sitting inside her family's tent in the al-Mawasi area south of Khan Younis and died at Nasser hospital alongside her unborn baby, whom her family had named Ayoub. Four members of one family — Momen Ahmed, his wife Haneen Saleh, and their daughters Lana, 12, and Bana, eight — were killed when their home in Beit Lahiya was struck on Thursday night, the ministry said. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported nine people injured when a displacement tent in al-Mawasi was shelled on Saturday. IMEMC News adds that Civil Defense crews recovered the remains of 17 Palestinians from beneath destroyed homes in Gaza City and the Nuseirat refugee camp on Sunday, and 13 more the previous day.

Gaza's health ministry said several hospital generators have stopped working in recent days because of shortages of oil, fuel and spare parts, with officials saying the limited oil Israel has allowed in covers only emergency needs and falls far short of the 2,500 litres hospitals require each month, as reported by Al Jazeera. The UN's humanitarian office, cited by The Guardian, says most of Gaza's 2.1 million people are approaching the rainy season in overcrowded displacement sites, at risk of flooding and disease, while preparation efforts are constrained by funding shortfalls and access restrictions. On August 31, The Guardian reports, a temporary halt to desalination in Israel reduced water available to about a million people who rely on the Israeli grid. Médecins Sans Frontières said Israeli forces issued 18 so-called evacuation orders between September 6 and 9 and struck a building less than 250 feet from an MSF clinic. Unicef reported at least seven children killed between August 23 and September 2.

During a visit to Ireland on Saturday, President Trump defended his administration's record on Gaza, telling reporters: "We put out the fire, and we got all the hostages back. There's very little happening right now in Gaza," according to Al Jazeera. He added that "there's a lot of good relationships taking place right now" and said "I think we've done a great job." That assessment contrasts sharply with the daily casualty counts reported by Gaza's health authorities and with statements from the territory's residents. Shalouf's husband, Ismail abu Mashi, told Anadolu in a video interview cited by The Guardian: "Where is the ceasefire they keep talking about? There is no such thing. There is killing every day. People are dying here every day." Hamas has accused Israel of undermining the implementation of Trump's broader plan, which envisions an Israeli withdrawal and the disarmament of Hamas, while Israel insists Hamas is the party violating the deal.

The wider war's cumulative toll, according to Gaza's health ministry as cited by The Guardian and IMEMC News, now stands at at least 73,783 Palestinians killed and 174,738 wounded since October 7, 2023, though Al Jazeera cited a figure of at least 73,669 from local authorities — the two outlets reporting slightly different counts. IMEMC reports that roughly 90 percent of the enclave's infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged, and that Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal has said more than 8,000 bodies remain buried beneath the rubble because of shortages of heavy equipment and fuel, with the Government Media Office reporting more than 9,500 Palestinians missing since October 2023. Recovery operations continue in phases, with crews searching beneath 147 destroyed buildings where an estimated 1,072 bodies may remain buried, IMEMC reports. With neither side reporting progress on the ceasefire's next steps — Israeli withdrawal and Hamas disarmament — near-daily strikes are likely to continue testing the truce's durability, and the IDF told The Guardian it was looking into the incident that killed Iman Shalouf.
