Josh Duhamel tells Us Weekly he was surprised and upset that Netflix canceled Ransom Canyon despite the show holding No. 1 for almost two weeks.
A No. 1 show still got the axe
Netflix has canceled Ransom Canyon after two seasons, and star Josh Duhamel is now speaking out about the decision.
According to Us Weekly in an interview published October 19, the 53-year-old actor admitted he was "pretty surprised, if I'm being honest," saying he thought the show was safe "because the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good and people really loved the show."
The series, set in Texas Hill Country and described as Virgin River meets Yellowstone, charted the intersecting lives of three ranching families, with Duhamel's Staten Kirkland opposite Minka Kelly's Quinn O'Grady. Both Yahoo (via E!
Online) and Just Jared report the same core reaction: Duhamel called the cancellation a surprise.
Duhamel's candid admission: 'I was a little upset'
The star did not hide his disappointment.
"I was a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show," he said, "but that's the business. At the same time, I get it. They have their reasons for why things stay and why things go. I don't always understand those reasons, but it's not my job to question."
Us Weekly's interview, as carried by Just Jared, also quotes him saying he was "bummed" the show did not get picked up for a third season and that "I've just gotta move on. I just feel bad for the fans who are really invested in it."
That mixture of frustration and resignation is what makes his response stand out: the lead actor of a top-ranking Netflix series openly saying he was upset with the platform that aired it.
Fans lose the Staten and Quinn ending
The most painful part, Duhamel says, is for viewers invested in whether his rancher Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly's Quinn O'Grady would ever get their happily-ever-after. His costar had already made peace with the news earlier: according to E!
Online via Yahoo, Kelly wrote on Instagram September 11, "All good things must come to an end. And so it is. Thank you all for giving us two beautiful seasons! I love you forever my Ransom Canyon family!!" E!
Online's roundup also notes the cancellation was confirmed by Deadline, and places Ransom Canyon among a wider 2026 cull that also saw Hulu drop Mindy Kaling's Not Suitable for Work — even as Netflix renewed The Hunting Wives, The Gentlemen and A Different World.
Duhamel isn't done with the saddle
What comes next is another rodeo, apparently.
Just Jared reports that Duhamel told Us Weekly he loved playing the cowboy character because it was "in my wheelhouse," noting he was already living a ranch-adjacent life at his cabin, and confirmed he would welcome more western roles: "There's a couple of things in the works that I may do, but those are too far off to talk about yet."
He even joked, "I'd much rather play a cowboy than a defense attorney." E!
Online adds that he remains open to reprising Staten if the opportunity arises. Just Jared also points readers to a reported reason for the cancellation, which it says was confirmed by Deadline — though Netflix itself has not explained the call publicly.
The untold streaming lesson: chart-topping placement for two weeks still wasn't enough to keep a beloved family saga alive.
