Switzerland's FINMA approved its first retail spot Bitcoin ETF, exempting it from diversification rules but requiring strict custody safeguards.
FINMA Clears a First for Swiss Retail Investors
Switzerland's Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it has approved the country's first exchange-traded fund that invests directly in Bitcoin and is open to retail investors.
The product is a Swiss retail fund in the category of 'other funds for alternative investments' with particular risk, according to finews.com.
FINMA did not identify the issuer, manager, ticker, or launch date, though finews.com reports that signs point to BIT Asset Management, formerly Matrixport Asset Management, which neither the regulator nor the company confirmed.
Why the Approval Breaks New Ground
This is the first time Bitcoin has been placed inside an approved retail fund wrapper in Switzerland, and it is distinct from the country's earlier milestones.
Crypto exchange-traded products have traded on SIX Swiss Exchange for years, but only as ETPs without fund status, and FINMA's 2021 crypto fund was limited to qualified investors and held a basket of assets.
The new vehicle concentrates on a single cryptocurrency, letting ordinary investors buy shares in a supervised fund that holds the underlying Bitcoin directly rather than a debt-style certificate.
The Diversification Exemption FINMA Granted
To make a single-asset retail fund possible, FINMA granted an exemption from its standard risk-diversification requirements.
The regulator justified the carve-out by citing Bitcoin's long trading history and particularly high trading volume compared with other digital assets, an explanation repeated across the pack's reports.
FINMA also acknowledged growing investor demand for crypto products, noting that several other providers have submitted or announced Bitcoin ETF applications, so this approval may be the first of several in Switzerland.
Custody Safeguards and a Stern Health Warning
The approval came with heavy conditions. Supervised institutions must put measures in place against operational and custody risks under FINMA's January 12, 2026 supervisory notice, which finews.com reports requires clients' crypto assets to stay out of the custodian's bankruptcy estate.
Sellers must also comply with the Financial Services Act, including suitability checks and clear warnings about volatility and potential losses.
FINMA stressed that Bitcoin remains a highly risky investment even through an approved ETF, and that sharp swings could cause invested capital to lose considerable value.
Demand Context: US Funds Show Where Flows Stand
The Swiss approval lands amid strong fund demand in the US market, where spot Bitcoin ETFs have been permitted since January 2024 and have attracted well over $57 billion in assets within less than three years, according to CryptoPotato.
CoinDesk, cited in The Block's coverage, reports US spot Bitcoin ETFs drew roughly $527 million in net inflows on Monday — their largest daily total in a month — with BlackRock's IBIT taking in $665 million, its strongest day in over a year, while Fidelity and Grayscale funds saw withdrawals.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust currently manages about $65 billion, per finews.com.
What Comes Next for Swiss Bitcoin Access
FINMA has not named the issuer or set a launch date, so Swiss retail investors have a regulatory green light but no product they can yet identify or buy. The regulator's statement that multiple providers have filed or announced applications suggests competition to be first to market.
Switzerland has long positioned itself as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction — Lugano adopted Bitcoin and USDT payments for municipal fees in 2023 — and this approval extends regulated access further, though FINMA's warnings make clear that retail eligibility does not change the volatility risk of the underlying asset.
