A verified fan account's AI selfie reading 'MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN' went viral during Mia Goth's divorce before her team exposed it as fake.
The selfie that fooled the internet
Because the account carried a blue verification badge and more than a million followers, several entertainment outlets ran the image as a genuine, cheeky dig at LaBeouf.
According to Indiatimes, one top comment read "Right after the divorce news is crazy" while another declared "Who is this diva? I love you, woman." The timing did the rest: with every move under a microscope, the internet had a story nobody had checked.
Goth's team: she has no social media at all
The picture was fake, and Goth never posted anything anywhere. Goth's team says it has filed multiple complaints with Instagram about the verified fan account, which repeatedly posted counterfeit AI images of the star.
Tripicchio called it "disconcerting on a fundamental level" that the fan account met Instagram's criteria for a blue check, adding it is "incomprehensible that Instagram evidently prioritizes the dissemination of forged and manipulated images over the protection and integrity of a public figure's likeness."
Why the blue checkmark no longer protects anyone
The verification badge that once signaled authenticity has been weakened by Meta's own policy shift. Meanwhile, Meta does not ban AI depictions of real people; it labels some AI content, and Netflix Junkie and Geo News both note a carve-out under which still images do not require a label at all.
Geo News reports the account, titled "Mia Goth | Fan Page," posted the image on October 8. One X user, cited by Indiatimes, called it infuriating that the checkmark system was "systematically destroyed" so apps could charge for verification.
Meta removes the account for impersonation
The backlash was swift, and the platform eventually acted. According to Indiatimes, Meta spokesperson Alex Dziedzan confirmed the account was removed for impersonating a public figure, and users noted @miagoth_ vanished for violating Community Standards on fraud and scam.
Netflix Junkie reports the page appeared gone by Tuesday afternoon. comingsoon.net says it remains unclear whether Meta removed the account or its administrator deactivated it following the criticism.
Either way, the takedown arrived only after the fake had already spread widely and been treated as real news — fact-checking, as Netflix Junkie puts it, arrived late to the party.
Hollywood's deepfake fight gains a new case
Goth's experience lands in a growing pile of celebrity deepfake grievances.
comingsoon.net and Indiatimes note that figures including Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett and Tom Hanks have spoken out against AI-generated images and deepfakes — Johansson condemned OpenAI in 2024 for using a sound-alike voice after declining to collaborate, per Indiatimes.
Public reaction to Goth's statement, reported by Indiatimes, included users arguing that generating AI images of real people should not be allowed at all, and that she should start suing.
The episode has reignited debate over how difficult it has become to distinguish authentic images from fabricated ones.
The real Goth story runs on without the noise
While the AI drama played out, Goth's actual career kept accelerating, according to Netflix Junkie.
After the X trilogy and her writing and producing work on Pearl, she played Elizabeth Harlander in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, a Netflix film that premiered at Venice and collected multiple Oscar nominations.
In Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey she played the conniving handmaiden Melantho opposite Anne Hathaway, and Star Wars: Starfighter, with Goth as a main antagonist opposite Ryan Gosling, is due around May 2027. Rumors even link her to Polaris in Marvel's X-Men reboot, though nothing is official.
The only thing AI added to her year, as Netflix Junkie puts it, was a headline she never asked for.
