USA Today reports James Austin Johnson brought his Trump to SNL UK for the first time as the British show kept needling Shane Gillis.
What Happened on SNL UK This Weekend
While the American SNL sat dark on Oct. 17, its British counterpart aired a brand-new episode packed with transatlantic shade.
Weekend Update co-anchor Ania Magliano delivered a foul-mouthed rebuke of Shane Gillis over his Oct.
10 monologue, and the cold open pulled off something the spinoff had never done before: James Austin Johnson cameoed as President Donald Trump, crashing a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, played by Freddie Meredith, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, played by George Fouracres.
USA Today notes the cameo was only possible because the U.S. version skipped the week.

The video making the rounds is the SNL UK cold open in which Johnson's Trump tells Burnham he wants them to swap jobs. Per USA Today, Trump declares, "I take over the UK. You take America," before calling the U.S. presidency "a terrible place full of disgusting people."
Trump also braced for a bad midterm loss and broke the fourth wall, asking why SNL UK doesn't have "one guy who can play Trump" before recruiting Johnson himself.
Why the Crossover Is a First
USA Today calls Johnson's Trump appearance the first time the character has appeared on SNL UK, a rare instance of the British version referencing the American show at all.
The Independent adds that SNL UK's second series has become notorious for roasting political, royal and entertainment figures, mocking Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's return in episode one and having guest host Amelia Dimoldenberg call Ed Sheeran a "world-famous redheaded puppet."
A live American cast import takes that provocation to a new level.
The Gillis Joke That Anchored the Night
Multiple outlets, including Deadline and The Daily Beast, report Magliano used an Oktoberfest story about a ride operator handing out free cycling shorts to stop upskirting as her setup: the shorts protect women "from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse," she said, as a photo of Gillis's monologue flashed onscreen.
She then needled his accidental F-bomb in a Dr. Seuss sketch — "Oh Shane, you're not allowed to say that" — before swearing at him uncensored, drawing loud studio cheers because SNL UK airs after 10 p.m. without FCC-style broadcast restrictions.
The Backlash Around Gillis Keeps Growing
The Los Angeles Times reports SNL insiders joined the criticism, with Michael Che writing "Thanks a lot, Shane" on Instagram and former cast members Ego Nwodim and Cecily Strong posting pointed gym-attire jokes; the Times argues Lorne Michaels's silence is telling given he invited Gillis back a third time.
USA Today reports Che struck a different tone publicly on the Today show, saying "That's comedy," while Dan Levy said men should call out misogyny. Gillis has not addressed the backlash, per USA Today.
What Comes Next for Both Shows
The American SNL returns Oct. 31 with "Obsession" star Inde Navarrette hosting, per USA Today, giving the institution two weeks to sit with a controversy the Los Angeles Times calls a self-inflicted wound Lorne Michaels could have avoided.
SNL UK, meanwhile, has established itself as an uncensored rival willing to punch upward at its own parent franchise — and with Johnson proving the door swings both ways, viewers may wonder which crossover the British show attempts next before the Halloween episode lands.
