Aaron Donald Unretires, Rejoins Rams on One-Year Deal

Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement to re-sign with the Rams for one year and up to $30 million, joining Myles Garrett on a loaded defense.

Aaron Donald is coming back. More than two years after retiring, the three-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year will rejoin the Los Angeles Rams, signing a one-year, $20 million deal that can be worth up to $30 million with playoff incentives, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Rams confirmed the 35-year-old's return shortly after. Donald announced it in fitting fashion: in his letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell, he quoted Michael Jordan's famous 1995 statement, writing "I'm back. Sincerely, Aaron Donald," and posted "We back" on the announcement page. His wife Erica joked on X, "I let him out the house y'all."

The comeback traces to June 1, when the Rams acquired Myles Garrett from Cleveland for Jared Verse and a first-round pick. That same day, Donald posted a workout video captioned "#ready," and head coach Sean McVay publicly encouraged the idea. Per NFL.com, the league's transaction wire recorded an official Donald tryout on Aug. 5 — helmet on, no full pads — and a second on Aug. 16, both reported because he used team equipment. As recently as Sunday morning, doubts had crept in: ESPN's Schefter reported Donald left Rams offices without notifying the team of his plans, then announced his return less than two hours later. Fox News reports he spent roughly six weeks working out twice daily with personal trainers and changed his diet.

Donald will join a defensive front NFL.com says will be lauded as a new-age Fearsome Foursome, a nod to the Rams' legendary Deacon Jones–Merlin Olsen line. The Donald-Garrett pairing boasts 17 combined Pro Bowl selections, 13 All-Pro honors, 236.5 sacks and five Defensive Player of the Year awards. Garrett won his second DPOY last season with an NFL single-season record 23 sacks. They'll line up beside Braden Fiske (11.5 sacks in two seasons), 2025 Pro Bowler Byron Young, Kobie Turner and Poona Ford. Add corners Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson acquired from Kansas City, plus reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford, and Fox News notes the Rams fell only in last season's NFC Championship game before this haul.

McVay told reporters the Rams haven't decided whether Donald will play in the Sept. 10 opener against San Francisco, with his "football shape" and rust the prevailing storylines. The stakes couldn't be grander: Super Bowl LXI will be hosted Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium — the Rams' home field and the site of Donald's signature moment, closing out the 23-20 win over Cincinnati in Super Bowl LVI. He'll be the only starter from that title defense still on the roster, rejoining holdovers Tyler Higbee, Alaric Jackson, Coleman Shelton and Stafford. Per NFL.com, Donald's return pushes his Hall of Fame candidacy back five years, and with seven prime-time games, anything short of a championship will be deemed a disappointment.
