Celine Dion performed her penultimate Paris comeback show in an Alaia bustier and a reimagined 1997 Chanel Oscars gown, despite onstage stumbles.
A Voice Returns to the Stage After Years Away
Celine Dion, 58, performed her penultimate comeback concert at Paris's Plenitude Arena on Friday evening, marking a full-length live return after a multi-year hiatus following her 2022 stiff-person syndrome diagnosis, the Daily Mail reports.
Dion had performed only once in the past six years before this residency — at the 2024 Paris Olympics — and suspended her 2023 European Courage World Tour because of her health, ABC News reports. She has told Harper's Bazaar she experienced symptoms for 17 years before the formal diagnosis.
The five-week Paris residency, announced in March as what she called a birthday gift to herself, kicked off September 12 and continues in May 2027.
Why This Comeback Surprised the Vocal World
What makes the residency remarkable for singing fans is the condition behind it: the Daily Mail notes stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that can cause muscle stiffness and spasms, with rigidity, unsteadiness and difficulty walking — and ABC News reports there is currently no cure.
To prepare, Dion told Harper's Bazaar she committed to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week, ballet classes with a local company on two other days, and rehabilitation involving new meds, physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy.
The Daily Mail also reports that mid-residency, Dion lost her balance while singing 'Un Autre Monde' at her 11th concert, quickly recovering and giving the crowd a thumbs up.
The Evidence: A Difficult, Emotional Night on Stage
According to the Daily Mail, footage shared on Instagram showed Dion overcome with emotion during 'Pour Que Tu M'aimes Encore,' pausing to say she was forgetting her words and covering her face before the Paris crowd helped her through the song.
She told them: 'Thank goodness you're here, I'm sorry.'
The same report says she shared with Harper's Bazaar that she is being honest about her journey — 'it's not always pretty... but it's called life' — and framed the residency as a gift to fans: 'It's been so long, I would like to offer them something to show how I've missed them.'
Fashion History Revisited: The 1997 Chanel Gown Returns
The Daily Mail reports Dion wore a black sculptural Alaia bustier with a long black skirt for the penultimate show, then stepped out in a reimagined version of the shimmering Chanel gown first worn at the 1997 Oscars, reinterpreted by Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy and adorned with thousands of jewels and beads.
The look included the 18-karat white gold Chanel Comète necklace, set with 1,080 diamonds weighing more than 67 carats. The Daily Mail adds that Mattel has honoured Dion with a Barbie doll inspired by her navy dress from her 1998 'My Heart Will Go On' Academy Awards performance.
What Comes Next for Dion's Voice
The Daily Mail says Dion headed to La Défense Arena the next day for the final show of her concert series, in black Chanel at the Le Royal Monceau hotel, with the residency set to continue in May 2027.
ABC News frames the stakes plainly: the Harper's Bazaar interview and the 2024 documentary 'I Am: Celine Dion' — which Dion said she made because 'the least I can do is tell them that I'm alive' — put her recovery in public view, and every Paris show tests how her voice and body hold up.
For a singing audience, the question now is whether these triumphant, imperfect nights become a durable second act or a valedictory.
