Brady Tkachuk scored a natural hat trick with brother Matthew assisting on all three goals as the Panthers beat the Blue Jackets 7-3, an NHL first.
What happened: eight minutes of brotherly history in Columbus
Brady Tkachuk scored three consecutive goals in just over eight minutes of the second period on Tuesday night, and his brother Matthew registered an assist on every one of them, as the Florida Panthers beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 7-3.
According to NHL PR, Brady is the first player in league history to have his brother assist on all three goals of a natural hat trick. The outburst came with Florida trailing 1-0 on the road, and two of the three goals came on the power play, according to Sportskeeda.
The Panthers improved to 3-2-2 with the win.
Why it's surprising: a slump-buster that rewrote the record books
The timing made it remarkable. Brady had recorded just a single assist through his first six games with Matthew and the Panthers, and Tuesday's outburst delivered his first goals as a Panther following his offseason acquisition from Ottawa, according to Sportskeeda.
He is the ninth player in NHL history to have his brother set up three goals of a hat trick, and the first since Daniel Sedin scored on three Henrik Sedin helpers in 2015.
Brady told ESPN he had felt the pressure: "I felt like I wasn't doing my job, and wasn't good enough, but knew eventually it was going to come." According to Sportskeeda, it was his fourth career hat trick.
The evidence: a nine-point family night
The stat lines tell the story. Brady finished with a hat trick and an assist (3-1—4), while Matthew posted five assists (0-5—5), and the brothers became the first pair of brothers and teammates since the Sedin twins in 2015 to combine for nine points in a single game.
Matthew set a Panthers franchise record for assists in a single period, and both brothers also assisted on a Carter Verhaeghe goal later in the second frame, with Matthew adding a helper on a Sam Reinhart goal early in the third.
According to Bleacher Report, Brady's hat trick was the third-fastest in franchise history.
The stakes: filling the Barkov and Marchand void
Florida needed a jolt. The Panthers had dropped four of their last five games while losing key players including Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand to injuries expected to sideline each for at least the next month, according to Bleacher Report.
Brady is the eighth Panthers player to record a natural hat trick, and the first since Matthew did it in 2024.
What's next: can the family business keep rolling?
The brothers' previous combined goal had come for Team USA at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, making Tuesday their first tally as Panthers teammates.
Markerzone reports Florida hosts Vancouver on Thursday, where coach Paul Maurice will hope this was the start of something rather than a one-night show. Brady himself framed it simply: "Once one goes in, then the ball starts rolling."
Fans on X were quick to react, with Sportskeeda noting posts ranging from "Sens fans in shambles" to "that's not a hat trick, that's a family business."
