JustWatch, the 50-million-user streaming guide, launched its own service Tuesday with 30 content partners, a free ad tier and a $3.99 ad-free plan.
JustWatch crosses the line from guide to streamer
On Tuesday, October 20, the JustWatch Group officially launched JustWatch TV, a streaming service built directly inside the JustWatch apps and website that 50 million people already use to find where movies and shows are streaming.
Per Deadline, the Berlin-based company, founded in 2014, is now 'officially in the programming game' after twelve years as the streaming era's TV Guide.
The service launched across the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand — with TechCrunch reporting Switzerland as a twelfth market. CEO David Croyé called it 'the most important new development in our company's twelve-year history.'
Three ways to watch, from free to lifetime
JustWatch TV offers three tiers: a free ad-supported curated selection, a rental store called JustWatch TV Store, and JustWatch TV Plus, an ad-free plan at $3.99 per month.
TechCrunch reports the Plus tier carries more than 300 ad-free titles in the US, a 10% discount on hundreds of rentals, and guide features like advanced filters and the option to hide previously seen titles.
Ars Technica adds a curious twist: a $50 lifetime subscription is being sold for a 'limited' time, though the company would not say how long. Ars also notes free movies can be played without creating an account.
A 30-partner catalog with hard-to-find gems
The service launched with 30 content partners, including Cineverse in the US, LEONINE Studios in Germany, SND in France and Altitude in the UK and Ireland, joining previously announced suppliers Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street and Vortex Media, according to Variety and Media Play News.
TheWrap's report also lists A24 among partners. Ars Technica's hands-on found free-with-ads titles like Green Room (2015), Locke (2013) and Sing Sing (2023), plus Friday the 13th (1980) and Hotel Mumbai (2018).
JustWatch SVP Quentin Carbonell told StreamTV Insider, as cited by Ars, that the catalog has 'a few hundred titles across' the tiers.
Why a guide turning streamer is a reversal
JustWatch built its business on the fragmentation it now joins: a guide covering more than 500,000 movies and shows across over 1,500 services, powering some 1,400 partner sites, per TechCrunch.
The surprise is that the neutral referee is now a competitor — the ad-free Plus tier squares off against Roku's $2.99 Howdy, per TechCrunch, while CBR frames the free tier as direct competition for Tubi and Pluto TV.
The strategy leans on data: Media Play News reports the catalog is curated using 'billions of data points' from JustWatch's audience about what people actually want to watch.
The ad-data play behind the launch
JustWatch says the service is a 'logical addition' to its guide, and the payoff may be advertising rather than subscriptions.
Multiple outlets, including Ars Technica and Media Play News, report that JustWatch TV will feed deeper audience data into JustWatch Media, the group's campaign planning and buying arm for film marketing across YouTube, Meta and TikTok.
Carbonell told StreamTV Insider, as cited by Ars Technica, that the company aims for 100 million monthly users 'in the years to come.' TechCrunch also reports users can request titles they want added, shaping the catalog over time.
What comes next for the 50-million funnel
For devoted streaming watchers, the launch is one to test immediately since the service lives inside apps they may already use.
The rental store starts in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand with more markets to follow, per TheWrap and Media Play News, and JustWatch says more content partners are already in the pipeline.
Ars Technica's reviewer found the library 'limited and somewhat dated' but points to Roku-owned Howdy, which reportedly reached 1 million subscribers six months in with a similar lineup, as proof the model can work.
Whether the guide's 50 million users convert into watchers will decide if this becomes streaming's most efficient launch funnel yet.
