The surprise is context: as Collider notes, 2026 has been brutal for Netflix shows that hit the top 10. The Duffer brothers' sci-fi series The Boroughs was canceled less than two weeks after its full-season drop, and the Yellowstone replacement Ransom Canyon was axed shortly after returning for Season 2. Against that backdrop, renewing The Hunting Wives before Season 2 even airs is an unusual vote of confidence. GO Magazine points out that fans celebrated it as a rare case of a queer-forward sapphic show surviving past its first season.

The TV Cave reports the show's commercial case: Season 1 spent five weeks on Netflix's Global Top 10 English-language TV list, climbed as high as No. 2 globally, reached the Top 10 in 40 countries, and has collected more than 35 million views since its July 2025 debut. What's on Netflix adds that the eight-episode first season totaled 811 million minutes viewed in its first week, surpassed 2 billion minutes by week two as the most-streamed series in the U.S., and stayed in Netflix's Top 10 for 47 consecutive days.

Season 1 adapted May Cobb's bestselling novel, but MovieWeb notes Seasons 2 and 3 will be the first time the show goes completely beyond the book's pages. Showrunner Rebecca Cutter told Tudum: 'I'm so stoked to be heading back to Maple Brook, and I promise that once you've finished Season 2, you'll be desperate to see what happens next. Buckle up, because Season 3 will be even more scandalous and twisted.' Brittany Snow has teased to Entertainment Tonight, as MovieWeb cites, that someone dies in Season 2 — a hint the outlet links to Cutter's cliffhanger warning.

The renewal lands with the show's mysteries unresolved. Outlets including MovieWeb and AOL recap the finale: Margo was revealed as the killer of Texas teen Abby, and Sophie ran over Margo's brother with her car, dumping the body and carrying her own murder secret. AOL notes Margo may figure out what Sophie did, since when she called Kyle at the end of the finale, it was Sophie who answered. Season 2's logline says Sophie and Margo are on the outs until old secrets and new foes force them back together — asking whether they are the hunters or the hunted.
