OpenAI announced its frontier AI models and Codex will run on Google Cloud, placing its technology on all three major US cloud platforms.

A Rivalry Becomes a Partnership

OpenAI will make its artificial intelligence models available to developers through Google Cloud, ending years of direct competition between the two companies, according to CNBC.

The ChatGPT creator said its models will appear in Google Cloud's model garden and its Antigravity coding tool in the coming weeks.

For OpenAI, the effort reflects a growing push to expand distribution of its technology to enterprise developers as it looks to build its business beyond consumer roots.

Reuters reports the partnership will bring OpenAI's latest models, such as GPT-6 Astra, and its Codex coding agent to Google Cloud, deepening ties between two rivals even as they compete in core AI products and search.

OpenAI said in a blog post that Google Cloud's longstanding investment in machine learning and AI has made it a destination for AI workloads and the developers building them.

Why the Move Is Surprising

The announcement completes a rapid and striking reversal. OpenAI was founded in 2015 partly as a counterweight to the concentration of AI research at companies like Google, according to CNBC.

Two years later, Google employees submitted the influential Transformer academic paper that propelled AI, but it was OpenAI that helped bring the technology forward with ChatGPT.

Less than six months ago, OpenAI said Microsoft would no longer have the exclusive license on its intellectual property, and CNBC reports Amazon started hosting OpenAI models in April, one day after that exclusivity ended.

Now Google is getting its shot, which puts OpenAI's models on all three of the top US cloud infrastructure providers. The move also follows an earlier, quieter cooperation: OpenAI used Google's cloud to run ChatGPT and its application programming interface last year.

The Evidence: What Each Side Says

The companies confirmed the arrangement through a joint announcement and OpenAI blog post.

OpenAI said in a statement that Google Cloud's built-in access controls, centralized data governance and high-performance infrastructure will support demanding enterprise workloads, according to The Times of India.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the company wants customers to choose models suited to their work, helping them achieve what he called optimal quality and lower costs, as reported by CoinGape.

Times of India also reports that enterprises with Google Cloud spend commitments will be able to draw down those GCP commitments for purchases of OpenAI models, which will be transacted through the Google Cloud Marketplace.

According to Nokiapoweruser, usage counts toward unified Flexible Savings Plans across multiple model providers and appears on a single monthly Google Cloud invoice, simplifying FinOps oversight for enterprise buyers.

The Stakes for the Cloud Market

The deal lands at a moment when hyperscalers are becoming the main commercial channels for frontier AI labs, a shift Reuters documents by noting that Anthropic, an OpenAI rival backed by Amazon and Google, drew 47% of its 2025 revenue from cloud providers Amazon and Google's platforms, according to its IPO filing reviewed by Reuters.

Google has been on a run in cloud computing this year: CNBC reports annualized revenue growth in the segment accelerated to about 82% in the second quarter from 63% in the first quarter, thanks partly to strong demand for AI models and custom chips, well ahead of Amazon's 37% and Microsoft's 42% second-quarter cloud growth.

All three report quarterly results next week. Most business spending on AI goes to OpenAI and Anthropic, according to corporate card issuer Ramp data cited by CNBC, and Reuters notes cloud providers usually take a cut from sales through their platforms.

Enterprise Access and Data Controls

Beyond the headline distribution deal, the partnership bundles enterprise features that could matter to regulated industries.

Nokiapoweruser reports that customer prompts, context and outputs remain fully contained within designated cloud boundaries, that data will never be used to train base models, and that zero-data-retention options are coming soon.

Workloads run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure, with hardened gateways preventing third-party model vendors from accessing customer cloud environments, and every query operates under an authenticated identity with central audit logging, according to Nokiapoweruser.

The Times of India reports the rollout will soon extend deeper into Google's productivity and agentic ecosystems, with OpenAI's models scheduled to become available within Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, giving enterprise clients the flexibility to select different foundation models for specific operational needs.

Developers can also connect Codex CLI and desktop workflows directly for inference.

What Comes Next

The rollout begins with private previews for OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models to select enterprise customers in Google Cloud's Model Garden, with general availability following shortly after, according to Nokiapoweruser.

CoinGape reports Microsoft will continue to be OpenAI's primary cloud partner, maintaining the existing relationship as distribution expands, while OpenAI has already opened access to its models via AWS, Oracle and now Google Cloud.

The commercial stakes are high for OpenAI itself: CNBC reports the company is courting investors at a $1.4 trillion valuation and targeting an initial public offering, and enterprise distribution across all three major US clouds supports its goal of growing revenue beyond consumer subscriptions.

Meanwhile, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are separately advancing a company-led effort to oversee advanced AI, per TokenPost, though no uniform industry requirements are yet in place.
