Jaguar unveiled the Type 01, a £120,000 four-door electric GT with 1,015 hp, 450 miles of range and no rear window, relaunching the brand.

The reveal: a copy of nothing

Jaguar has finally revealed the Type 01, the electric four-door GT on which the brand's entire future rests, unveiled in New York with first deliveries expected from mid-2027. The car is a 5.2-metre all-aluminium saloon with a 3.2-metre wheelbase, a very long bonnet, low roofline and no rear window — rear vision comes from a roof-mounted camera feeding a cross-cabin screen. Prices start at £120,000, with well-equipped cars at around £150,000 and bespoke specs possibly topping £200,000. Autocar reports the programme cost about £2.25 billion and lifts Jaguar out of its traditional executive-class price bracket into territory between top-end Mercedes and bottom-end Bentley.

Why this gamble is so surprising

Five years ago Jaguar was unprofitable and, in Autocar's framing, faced three options: shut down, tweak existing cars, or relive the shock of the E-Type with something entirely new. It chose the third, and the result copies nothing — though insiders draw comparisons to the long-nosed XJS of the mid-1970s. JLR's marketing director Carlee Hardaker told Autocar the company is happy that some research respondents scored the car 1s and 2s: "We want this car to evoke emotions." The Autopian notes the concept's design had already softened by familiarity by reveal time, yet still positions the car as a deliberately hostile statement aimed at a specific cohort of wealthy buyers rather than traditional Jaguar fans.

The numbers: tri-motor power and 450-mile range

The Type 01 uses three motors — a 349bhp unit up front and two independent 416bhp motors at the rear enabling torque vectoring — for a combined output of 1,015 horsepower and 1,007 lb-ft of torque, per Yahoo Autos. It covers 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and 62-112mph in 4.0 seconds. At a steady cruise the front motor alone drives the car to save energy. Its 0.23 drag coefficient makes it Jaguar's most aerodynamic production car yet, helped by active vanes and a three-stage rear spoiler worth up to 75kg of downforce.

Bespoke engineering under the skin

Jaguar engineers looked for a partner platform but found nothing suitable for a 5.2-metre, 1.4-metre-tall car on 23-inch wheels, so it developed its own Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) — now the subject of more than 360 patent applications, according to Autocar. Chief engineer Jon Darlington explained the battery cells are split between front and rear compartments so occupants can sit low; a conventional skateboard layout would have added 20cm of height and killed the styling. Twin-chamber air springs, adaptive dampers and four-wheel steering give the big GT a turning circle similar to a Volkswagen Golf's.

The stakes: a brand recovering from crisis

The launch arrives as JLR works to recover its commercial fortunes. International Finance reports that a 2025 cyberattack halted production for over five weeks, contributing to a pre-tax loss of £485 million for the fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2025, with about 10% of the workforce set to leave through voluntary redundancies over two years. The Type 01's performance also matters for validating JEA, the platform Carwow reports underpins a likely Type 02 SUV that could follow around 2027.

What happens next — and what the fans say

Reservations open in early 2027 with first deliveries in the second half of the year, Yahoo Autos reports, and Jaguar says the car will be designed, engineered and built in the UK. Reaction is divided by design: The Autopian argues the Type 01 is aimed at a specific ultra-wealthy tech clientele and that those people had better actually buy it, while Top Gear offers skeptics a list of 11 used Jaguars instead — from a £4,000 XK8 to a £500,000 XJ220 — noting the XJ220 shows halo Jags are not always hits at launch. Jaguar is hedging the retail experience too: T3 reports its new Knightsbridge flagship in London pairs the Type 01 with Café Eighty-One, a restaurant with a Michelin-starred menu inspired by the car.
