SpaceX's uncrewed Starfall reentry capsule flew again on the Bandwagon-5 rideshare, joining Varda's W-7 and 31 customer payloads before dawn Monday.

What launched before dawn

SpaceX launched its Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station during a one-hour window that opened at 6:30 a.m. EDT Monday, October 19.

The Falcon 9 carried 32 payloads, including the company's own uncrewed Starfall reentry capsule and 31 customer payloads.

Spaceflight Now reported that the rocket flew on a southeasterly trajectory, and the 45th Weather Squadron forecast a 55 percent chance of acceptable weather, citing gusty winds from a cold front along southern Florida.

Space Coast Daily noted the launch marked the 60th orbital rocket launch of 2026 from Florida's Space Coast.

Why Starfall is the payload to watch

The surprising headliner is Starfall, SpaceX's own reentry capsule, which the company first debuted in June without revealing its presence until close to launch — and then only via a rendering.

According to Spaceflight Now, SpaceX commentator Zachary Luppen described Starfall as a microgravity lab researchers and entrepreneurs can use to develop products, echoing the in-space manufacturing opportunities proven aboard the International Space Station.

The Federal Aviation Administration's environmental assessment, cited by Spaceflight Now, sizes the vehicle at about 0.75 meters tall, 3.1 meters in diameter, and 2,100 kilograms, capable of supporting up to 1,000 kilograms of payload — a substantial reentry capacity for a company better known for launching others' capsules.

A second reentry vehicle shares the ride

Starfall is not the only return-capable spacecraft on the flight. Varda Space Industries is flying its W-Series 7 capsule, which per Spaceflight Now is about three times smaller than Starfall and carries the cancer drug Protac.

Varda says molecules can crystallize differently in microgravity, potentially producing crystal forms with better solubility that could turn protein-degrading molecules into more practical cancer treatments.

The mission also carries Portal Space Systems' 260 kg Starburst-1 maneuvering demonstrator, fully funded by Portal ahead of advertised customer flights starting in 2027.

The evidence: a flight-proven booster and payload manifest

SpaceX flew the mission on first-stage booster B1085, making its 19th flight after previously launching NASA's Crew-9, Fram2, Firefly's Blue Ghost Mission 1, RRT-1, SXM-10, SXM-11, MTG-S1, EchoStar25 and ten Starlink batches, per Spaceflight Now.

The booster targeted a landing on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas roughly nine minutes after liftoff, which would be the 167th landing on that vessel and the 672nd Falcon booster landing overall.

Of the remaining 31 payloads, 20 were manifested by Exolaunch, including four HawkEye 360 radio-frequency satellites, four Iceye communications satellites and six Xona Space Systems navigation satellites.

The space jellyfish factor

The predawn timing raised hopes for another 'space jellyfish' — the glowing exhaust plume created when a rocket climbs into sunlight while the ground stays dark.

WRAL notes the best views favor the earlier portion of the 6:30–7:30 a.m. window, and because Bandwagon-5 flew southeast, the best show was expected for the Caribbean and central and southern Florida, with North Carolina seeing only a lower, fainter display than last week's spectacle.

Orlando Sentinel reported the weather risk extended downrange, with a moderate-to-high chance of unacceptable conditions at the booster recovery site, and that a Tuesday backup launch would improve weather odds to 85 percent.

What comes next

SpaceX has not stated what, if any, payloads are aboard this Starfall flight, per Spaceflight Now, leaving the capsule's second outing as shrouded as its first.

The mission underscores a fast-maturing return market: two independent reentry capsules on one rideshare, with Varda already flying W-8 and W-9 earlier in October on Transporter-18.

Space Coast Daily reported no local sonic booms were expected since the booster landed offshore, and that SpaceX has dialed back Florida launch plans while it builds up Starship infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A.

Watchers will be looking for word on Starfall's reentry and deployment details after the mission.
