President disclosed over 1,000 June trades in energy, defense, and tech firms affected by his.

What Happened

President Donald Trump disclosed more than 1,000 stock transactions from June in a filing to the Office of Government Ethics, according to both Forbes and CNN. The trades spanned a wide range of companies, including major technology firms, defense contractors, and energy companies. CNN reports that among the transactions were purchases and sales of stock in energy companies directly affected by Trump's ongoing war in Iran, which has driven up the global price of oil and sent U.S. gas prices soaring. Forbes separately reports that the filing listed over 1,000 individual sales and purchases, with Trump's largest single transaction being the June 22 sale of a Vanguard ETF valued between $5 million and $25 million.

What Happened

Why It Is Surprising

The volume of trading is unprecedented for a sitting president. CNN reports that the pace far outpaces the profits prior presidents have made while in office, many of whom sought to minimize personal investments that could be seen as potential conflicts of interest. Forbes reports that Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Robert Garcia estimated Trump made 14,000 stock trades in 2025 worth up to $1.06 billion, averaging roughly 50 trades per day. Forbes also estimates Trump made $2.4 billion during his first year back in office in 2025, far exceeding his estimated $760 million income in 2024, with most of that surge coming from cryptocurrency ventures rather than stock trades, which were mostly reinvested.

Why It Is Surprising

The Evidence in the Trades

According to CNN, Trump's June trades included two separate sales of Exxon Mobil stock valued between $1,001 and $15,000, followed by a later purchase within a similar range, as well as multiple transactions in Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Valero Energy, and Occidental Petroleum. CNN also reports trades in defense contractors Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and RTX between June 12 and June 24, with some sales coming the day after a purchase. Both Forbes and CNN report that Trump purchased SpaceX stock valued between $15,001 and $50,000 on June 23, roughly 11 days after its initial public offering. Forbes reports additional trades in Palantir, Meta, Broadcom, Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, as well as purchases of Berkshire Hathaway, Visa, and Mastercard valued between $1 million and $5 million each.

The Evidence in the Trades

The Stakes for Ethics Oversight

The White House has repeatedly denied that Trump influences the trades. CNN quotes White House spokesman Davis Ingle saying that Trump's portfolio "is independently managed by third-party financial institutions" and that "neither President Trump nor any member of his family has any ability to direct, influence, or provide input regarding how the portfolio is invested or when investments are being bought or sold." Forbes reports that Eric Trump said in May that the accounts are "managed by independent third-party financial institutions" and that the family has "any role in selecting, directing, approving, influencing or soliciting specific investments." Despite these assurances, CNN reports that the size and frequency of the transactions have drawn sharp criticism from Democrats and watchdogs concerned about personal profit from the presidency.

What Comes Next

Forbes reports that the White House told Bloomberg and other outlets that Trump's stock trades are made using "computer-based model portfolios that automatically replicate recognized indexes, such as the Schwab 1000." The scrutiny is likely to persist as Trump continues disclosing trades in companies shaped by his policy decisions. Meanwhile, the market performance of some traded companies adds another dimension: Trefis reports that Palantir returned 34% over the three months through late August, compared with 2.1% for the S&P 500, with net dollar retention climbing to 150% in fiscal Q1 2026 and full-year 2026 revenue guidance raised to a midpoint of $8.154 billion. CNN reports that Trump's earlier disclosures showed billions collected through cryptocurrency holdings, royalty payments, and property investments in 2025.
