A reported Xbox survey asks fans how they'd feel if Minecraft left PlayStation and Nintendo, with existing copies losing updates entirely.

What the Xbox survey actually asks

According to Windows Central reporting highlighted by GAMINGbible, Xbox Insider members have received surveys asking how they would feel if "all future" Xbox titles became console exclusives. The survey name-drops Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Hideo Kojima's Physint, per GamesRadar+.

The sharpest question reportedly imagines every Xbox game — except Call of Duty, which Microsoft is legally required to release on other platforms until at least 2033 — going exclusive, and adds that for Minecraft specifically, existing titles would no longer be available for purchase on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles and would not receive any new content updates.

Why dangling an update kill-switch is so brazen

GamesRadar+ calls the Minecraft question "so brazenly a bad decision that even being floated is concerning," noting that it goes beyond withholding future games: it contemplates ending content updates for versions players already own.

GAMINGbible notes Microsoft hasn't announced any plans to make this happen — it's a hypothetical — but the fact that the question is being asked at all suggests the company is exploring how players would react to a harder exclusivity line under new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, after Gears of War: E-Day was kept off PS5 despite reports that its PS5 port was nearly complete.

The scale of Minecraft's cross-platform audience

Minecraft has appeared on every console generation since its official 2011 launch, spawning spin-offs, a Netflix interactive series and a live-action movie, GAMINGbible notes.

GamesRadar+ points to hard numbers that show why a pullback would be felt by millions: Minecraft on Nintendo Switch has sold over 4 million physical copies in Japan alone, and the PS4 version had more than 17 million players as of 2019 — before a native PS5 version even arrived in 2024.

The game has sold over 425 million copies and attracts 300,000 new players a day. Cross-platform play also means exclusivity would fracture friend groups, especially among younger players.

Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls and Fallout in the mix

The survey reportedly also touches on Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Physint, the Kojima game Xbox Game Studios picked up after Sony cancelled it — and Kojima himself has said he doesn't know if Physint will release on PlayStation, GamesRadar+ reports.

GAMINGbible observes that The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 could be the two upcoming games best positioned to sell Xbox consoles, unlike Gears of War, which lacks their reach.

Hypothetical today, strategy signal tomorrow

Both GAMINGbible and GamesRadar+ stress that this is a survey about hypotheticals, not an announced plan, and no shift in strategy has been confirmed for Minecraft, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Call of Duty.

But surveys like this are how companies gauge backlash before acting, and the strategy has already moved once this year: Fable remains confirmed for a PS5 launch, yet Gears of War: E-Day went Xbox-and-PC only.

GamesRadar+ predicts that actually removing Minecraft from other platforms would spark a backlash dwarfing even complaints about Sony killing physical games.

The week's other niche talkers

While the exclusivity survey dominated conversation, fans had plenty else to chew on. Gaming Age scored The Jackbox Party Pack 12 an 8.0, praising We Forgot a Card and Idol Factions while finding Hyperface and Debate and Switch the weaker entries.

PCMag compared every current PlayStation and Xbox for GTA 6 ahead of its November 19 release, concluding the PS5 is the best-value pick at $649.99 against the Series X's $799.99, with the $499.99 Series S as the budget route.

And Bandai Namco launched Tales of Eternia Remastered across Switch 2, PS5, PS4 and Xbox Series X|S on October 15, complete with Melnics-language content.
