Paramount has picked up film rights to 'Red Rising,' with Francis Lawrence attached to direct.

The Deal: Darrow Goes to Mars at Paramount

Paramount Pictures has acquired film rights to 'Red Rising,' the first novel in Pierce Brown's best-selling dystopian sci-fi series, and attached Francis Lawrence to direct, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter on October 16 and confirmed by Deadline.

The adaptation has been in limbo for years — World of Reel notes the book was once set up at Universal, and was eyed as a series in the late 2010s — so a greenlight with a name director attached marks a genuine reversal for the decade-old property.

Why Lawrence Is a Dystopian Ringer

Lawrence is arguably the most bankable hand in young-adult dystopia: TheWrap counts four 'Hunger Games' films directed by him, with a fifth, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,' opening November 20, and he also directed 2023's 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.'

Variety frames him as no stranger to adapting popular YA novels, and IGN notes he is coming off last year's Stephen King adaptation 'The Long Walk.' For fans, the hope — echoed by World of Reel — is the 'Catching Fire' version of Lawrence, which many consider the franchise's best film.

The Book: A Color-Coded Rebellion on Mars

Set on a colonized Mars, the saga runs on a color-coded caste system: the super-strong Golds rule the solar system while the impoverished Reds toil as slave labor in its mines.

The story follows Darrow of Lykos, a Red miner who learns his people have been betrayed — Mars was made habitable generations ago — and undergoes a brutal transformation to infiltrate Gold society and bring it down, enrolling in a deadly military proving ground called the Institute.

Six books are published, with a seventh and final novel, 'Red God,' still to come.

Brown's Reaction and the Producing Team

Pierce Brown will executive produce, with Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy producing for their about:blank banner alongside Francesco Goedhuis.

Justin Rhodes — whose credits include 'Terminator: Dark Fate,' and who worked with Lawrence developing Netflix's video game adaptation of 'Bioshock' — writes the script.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the saga had sold over 6 million copies as of 2024, though it's unclear whether that figure was U.S. or global. Brown marked the news on Instagram, writing, per IGN, "Let fall the iron rain. Bloodydamn, I love this team."

Paramount's Literary Play

The deal fits a broader Paramount push into book adaptations: TheWrap and World of Reel point to 'Children of Blood and Bone,' based on Tomi Adeyemi's fantasy novel, hitting theaters January 15, 2027; 'Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,' based on Gabrielle Zevin's novel and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, due November 12, 2027; and 'The Midnight Library,' with Florence Pugh attached, set to shoot next year.

For a property that has circled Hollywood for a decade, landing at a studio actively building a literary slate is the strongest signal yet it will actually get made.

What Comes Next

World of Reel notes Lawrence's 'Sunrise on the Reaping' arrives November 20 — "it's the fifth film he's directed from the franchise. After that, it's off to Mars."

For the series' devoted fanbase, which greeted the news with the kind of enthusiasm Variety captured as "Hail Reaper!", the long wait to see Darrow on screen may finally be nearing its end.
