Christopher Nolan's 'The Prestige' returns to theaters January 29, 2027 for its 20th anniversary, playing on IMAX and 70mm for the first time.

A 2006 thriller heads back to theaters

Disney has announced a theatrical rerelease of Christopher Nolan's 2006 mystery thriller 'The Prestige' to mark the film's 20th anniversary, with Variety Australia and Hypebeast both reporting the film returns January 29, 2027.

The run will be the first time the acclaimed feature is presented on 70mm film and on IMAX screens.

Nolan said in a statement he is "very excited to bring 'The Prestige' back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time." The film stars Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman as rival Victorian-era stage magicians.

Why the format twist matters to film fans

Variety Australia notes that in the two decades since the film premiered, Nolan has revolutionized 70mm and IMAX and stoked mass audience interest in those formats through blockbusters like 'Oppenheimer' and 'The Odyssey'.

Hypebeast points out the rerelease follows Nolan's record-setting large-format box-office milestones, meaning a small early film now rides the formats its director helped make prestigious.

The evidence: a cult hit's modest original run

According to Variety Australia, 'The Prestige' was originally released on October 20, 2006 and generated roughly $100 million at the global box office while earning two Oscar nominations.

The ensemble cast includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis and David Bowie, with Nolan co-writing the screenplay alongside his brother Jonathan and producing with Emma Thomas and Aaron Ryder.

Hypebeast corroborates those cast, box-office and nomination details, and adds Disney as the studio handling the anniversary rerelease.

The stakes: Nolan's large-format era

Hypebeast reports that Nolan has become one of cinema's most prominent champions of large-format presentation, driving IMAX demand through 'The Dark Knight' trilogy, 'Inception', 'Interstellar', 'Oppenheimer' and 'The Odyssey'.

According to both outlets, after winning Best Director and Best Picture for 'Oppenheimer', Nolan's latest feature 'The Odyssey' has generated $1.788 billion worldwide, including a record-breaking $550 million in IMAX ticket sales.

Placing 'The Prestige' on those same screens extends his large-format project across his whole filmography.

What comes next

Per Variety Australia, Disney will officially rerelease 'The Prestige' in theaters on January 29, 2027, giving filmgoers their first chance to see the magician rivalry on 70mm and IMAX.

Variety Australia also notes Nolan is back in the awards race with 'The Odyssey', so the anniversary rerelease arrives while his new epic is still playing.

Also on the festival side, The Hollywood Reporter reports Tallinn Black Nights revealed its 30th-edition documentary lineup and special screenings, including Stephen Frears' 'Dangerous Liaisons' and Tim Blake Nelson's 'The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd'.
