Billionaire Warren Buffett, 96, spends his retirement evenings on YouTube watching Glenn Close clips, 1950s commercials and foreign talent shows.

Buffett's retirement screen time looks surprisingly ordinary

One month after handing the Berkshire Hathaway chairmanship to his son Howard — and after turning the CEO role over to Greg Abel in January — 96-year-old Warren Buffett has settled into a retirement routine that Fortune says looks a lot like anyone else's: sitting in front of the television watching YouTube. According to Fortune, citing the Wall Street Journal, his friend and frequent bridge partner Sharon Osberg often watches with him and says his range is broad. "It can be the silliest things," Osberg told the Journal. For a man with a net worth Fortune pegs at $143 billion, the platform of choice for unwinding is the same one the creator economy runs on.

An eclectic queue, not AI slop or CNBC clips

Fortune reports that Buffett's viewing tastes skip both the AI-generated Short feed and financial news reruns. Instead, the outlet lists clips featuring Glenn Close, a documentary about attorney Roy Cohn, television commercials from the 1950s, and Uzbekistan's version of America's Got Talent. Fortune also notes the hobby predates his formal exit: even while running the over $1 trillion conglomerate, his evenings were largely his own.

The tech holdout finally came around

Fortune frames the habit as notable because Buffett long resisted technology, waiting until his late eighties to trade his flip phone for an iPhone despite being a longtime Apple investor. But his comfort with personal hobbies is longstanding: Fortune recounts that he once spent as much as 80% of his working day reading — "Read 500 pages like this every day. That's how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest," he said — and played as much as eight hours of bridge a week, including with Bill Gates. "It's a game you can enjoy when you are in your nineties, and you are seeing a different intellectual challenge every seven minutes," Buffett told the Washington Post in 2017, as quoted by Fortune.

Why the creator economy should care

The business around those creators is professionalizing too: Roundtable, the Nasdaq-listed AI and DeFi-powered media platform, announced this week that former YouTube Global Operations managing director Erin Schaefer joined its board. "My entire career has been about using technology to help passionate voices build sustainable businesses, from YouTube creators to the brands that support them," Schaefer said in Roundtable's announcement. Buffett's evening queue, in other words, is the audience that entire platforms now compete to serve.
