Buze Diriba broke the Amsterdam course record with 2:16:12 while Lemi Berhanu missed the men's mark by three seconds in wet conditions.

What happened in Amsterdam

Ethiopia's Buze Diriba won the TCS Amsterdam Marathon on Sunday (18) in a course record of 2:16:12, improving on her previous best of 2:19:34 and breaking the 2:16:52 mark Yalemzerf Yehualaw set in 2024. Lemi Berhanu won the men's race in 2:03:33, just three seconds shy of the course record.

According to worldathletics.org, both winners ran negative splits in wet conditions for big personal bests.

Why it matters

Diriba, 32, moved to 16th on the world all-time list, per worldathletics.org, after already breaking 2:20 three times in the past 12 months — winning Frankfurt last October and placing second in Daegu in February.

Berhanu's time cut a minute off a PB set a decade ago, a striking resurgence for the 2016 Boston Marathon champion. The men's race saw eight runners break 2:05, which worldathletics.org notes is only the third time in history.

How the races unfolded

In the women's race, Diriba and defending champion Aynalem Desta led at halfway in 1:08:34, joined by Mestawut Fikir and Meseret Belete, per worldathletics.org.

Diriba kicked after 30km, was half a minute clear by 40km, and finished almost a minute ahead, with Desta second in 2:17:06 and Belete third in 2:18:06.

In the men's race, Nicholas Kipkorir made a big move near the Vondelpark, but Berhanu edged away after 40km to win by six seconds, with Kipkorir second in a PB of 2:03:39 and Patrick Mosin third in 2:03:58.

Detroit's own record falls

Stateside, ClickOnDetroit reports that Andy Bowman won the Detroit Free Press Marathon for a third straight year and shattered a course record that had stood since 1980. Allison Sherman won the women's full marathon, while JP Flavin and Megan O'Neil took the half-marathon titles.

Bowman says returning for a 50th-anniversary fourth straight win poses a tough choice, as Chicago two weeks earlier is slated to be the USATF Marathon Championship.
