TheGamer reports iShowSpeed signed on as a producer of the Obamas-backed documentary The Eyes of Ghana, reaching theaters October 28.

What happened: Speed joins the Obama-backed documentary

According to TheGamer, Higher Ground has released a new trailer for The Eyes of Ghana, a Ben Proudfoot documentary following Chris Tsui Hesse, personal cameraman to Ghana's first president Kwame Nkrumah, as he works to preserve more than 1,000 reels of film documenting Africa's fight for independence.

The outlet reports the film's executive producers include former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, and that Twitch streamer iShowSpeed — real name Darren Jason Watkins Jr. — has signed on as a producer for the theatrical release.

The film lands in US and Canadian theaters for one night on October 28, with Variety unpacking how the unlikely partnership came together. The streamer, who commands a following of over 60 million, said it is a great honor to help bring the film to the big screen.

Why it's surprising: a streamer and two presidents on one credit

The pairing is not random, TheGamer stresses. iShowSpeed is of Ghanaian heritage and was granted Ghanaian citizenship after his 'Speed Does Africa' tour, in which he livestreamed a journey across 20 countries in just 28 days.

He told the outlet he felt a profound connection to Ghana during his visit, saying Chris Hesse's camera 'captured the birth of African independence' and calling himself humbled by Hesse's legacy and proud to bring his story to his community.

The footage the film fights to save

TheGamer details the archival stakes behind the credit. The film negatives had been stored in London for decades because Ghana lacked facilities to process color film, a location that proved crucial after Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966, when footage documenting his government was destroyed en masse.

TheGamer quotes producer and Ghanaian filmmaker Anita Afonu, who began preserving the country's cinematic heritage while making her documentary Perished Diamonds and launched an initiative to digitize the historic archive.

She explained that because the films are stored in England, access is nearly impossible, so she pushed for digital copies to be brought home for researchers and filmmakers.

TheGamer reports director Ben Proudfoot met Hesse in 2021 while filming a UNICEF project, after journalist and co-producer Justice Baidoo introduced them, sparking the idea that grew into the feature.

The trailer and what comes next

It also lands amid a busy news stretch for the platform — PrimeTimer separately reports streamer itsKatchii abruptly ended her October 13 broadcast amid an unverified clip controversy, noting Twitch's guidelines make exceptions for slurs sung along to music and that no action has been confirmed.

Speed's move shows creators translating massive audiences into prestige-media influence.
