Variety reports 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' held No. 1 for a sixth weekend and is closing in on 'The Force Awakens' domestic record.

Six Weeks at No. 1

Sony's 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' spent its sixth consecutive weekend at the top of the domestic box office, earning $18 million from Friday to Sunday and an estimated $23.3 million across the Labor Day holiday frame, according to Variety. ABC News notes that makes it just the second film this decade to manage the feat, after 2022's 'Avatar: The Way of Water,' which led for seven straight weekends.

Why the Streak Is Surprising

The run stands out because it has unfolded during September and Labor Day, a stretch Variety's cited analyst David A. Gross calls traditionally sluggish — 'we haven't had a down weekend like this in a long time,' he told the outlet. The newcomer field offered little resistance: Paramount's 'By Any Means' opened fourth with $7.4 million, while 'Fall 2: Deadpoint' and A24's 'Onslaught' landed in 12th and 13th. Rentrak's Paul Dergarabedian told Variety the summer 'could signal a meaningful turning point for movie theaters.'

The Record Within Reach

Variety puts the film's domestic total at $923 million, within striking distance of 2015's 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' at $936 million, the unadjusted all-time North American record. International Business Times AU reports the film crossed $900 million in just 36 days, faster than 'The Force Awakens,' which needed 50 days, and credits Deadline for that comparison.

A Banner Summer Closes

The film's staying power has helped deliver Hollywood's strongest summer in years. Variety reports domestic ticket sales between May and early September reached $4.73 billion — the second-largest summer ever, not adjusted for inflation, behind 2013's $4.755 billion. Hits like 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' 'The Odyssey,' 'Toy Story 5' and 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' offset bombs such as Disney's 'Moana,' DC's 'Supergirl' and 'Masters of the Universe.'

The Rest of the Chart

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' also starring Holland, held second in its eighth weekend with $13 million, per Variety, reaching $584 million domestically and $1.62 billion worldwide — with Imax contributing $486 million. 'Coyote vs. Acme' fell just 27% in its second weekend to $37 million domestic, a satisfying result for a film Variety says Warner Bros. had shelved before Ketchup Entertainment picked it up. That keeps Holland in the top two movies of the weekend.

What Comes Next

Variety projects North American revenues could top $10 billion for the year for the first time since the pandemic, with 'Avengers: Doomsday,' 'Dune: Part Three' and 'Jumanji 3' slated around Christmas. International Business Times AU, citing industry projections, says Spider-Man's grip on No. 1 is expected to hold until a 'Resident Evil' reboot opens later this month. Whether 'Brand New Day' passes 'The Force Awakens' now looks, as trackers told that outlet, effectively inevitable.
