SBS News reports that executives from ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox News — which operate the White House television pool alongside CNN — reached the decision after closed-door discussions over the weekend. According to SBS, the broadcasters had suspended pool coverage after Trump barred CNN, MSNBC and Politico from the White House on September 18. Even after a September 24 court ruling, the pool had maintained it would refuse coverage until the administration officially restored CNN's press access, but the White House still excluded CNN from coverage aboard Air Force One on September 26, leaving the standoff unresolved going into the weekend.

The surprising part is how quickly a unified protest collapsed. Editor and Publisher, relaying the Times, says network leaders questioned whether they could sustain the suspension indefinitely. SBS News adds the reported rationale: executives concluded that an indefinite suspension of pool coverage would leave the public uninformed in the event of an emergency or crisis. That calculus weighed against the symbolic value of solidarity with CNN, which remained shut out even after a federal court found the administration's actions violated First Amendment free-speech protections. The practical question now is how the rotation handles CNN's turns. SBS News reports that the networks plan to decide whether to dispatch alternative reporting teams whenever CNN's slot in the pool rotation comes up. If they choose not to send a substitute, CNN's slot will be left vacant — meaning President Trump's schedule during that rotation will simply be excluded from these networks' coverage.
