Paramount is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film with CD Projekt RED co-producing, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura overseeing the project.

What Happened: Paramount Picks Up Night City

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077, the bestselling role-playing game from Polish developer CD Projekt RED, according to TVP World and Sweety High. Deadline broke the news on Oct. 8, 2026, confirmed the same day by Variety, per Sweety High. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers and G.I. Joe films, will oversee the project alongside CD Projekt RED. No director, writer, cast or release date has been announced, and Deadline reports the movie will tell a new story set in the Cyberpunk universe rather than adapt the game's plot directly.

Why It Matters: A Polish Game Joins Hollywood's Adaptation Wave

The surprise for film watchers is the scale and origin of the property. Cyberpunk 2077, released in December 2020, has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and it now becomes a marquee Hollywood adaptation for a studio on a video game buying spree. According to TVP World, Paramount is also pursuing adaptations of Street Fighter and Call of Duty, and Sweety High reports the Cyberpunk deal is the studio's third major video game grab lately. Sweety High also notes Paramount recently completed its merger with Warner Bros. under the Skydance name, making the timing notable for the studio's franchise strategy.

The Game's Star Power and a Sequel in Motion

The game features Keanu Reeves as rocker Johnny Silverhand, while Idris Elba appeared in the Phantom Liberty expansion. Sweety High reports it is unclear whether Keanu is attached to the film, and neither studio has said whether the game's main characters will appear, though Gameranx notes both actors have expressed interest in a project like this. CD Projekt RED's co-CEO Michał Nowakowski welcomed the partnership, saying the companies share creative ambitions for the franchise, per TVP World. The company is also developing a Cyberpunk sequel game and the next installment of The Witcher.

What Comes Next: No Date, But Night City Is Expanding

Neither studio has shared a timeline, so it may be a while before Night City reaches theaters, and Sweety High suggests fans watch for director and casting news. Meanwhile the franchise keeps growing elsewhere: Sweety High reports Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a 10-episode standalone series made by CD Projekt RED and Studio Trigger, premieres on Netflix on Oct. 20, and notes CD Projekt RED also announced a separate live-action project with Anonymous Content back in 2023 whose relationship to this new deal remains unclear. The 2022 Edgerunners anime helped fuel the game's comeback by introducing a new audience to the world.
