Tarantino's debut play 'The Popinjay Cavalier,' starring Sacha Baron Cohen, opens at the Phoenix Theatre on 18 March 2027; tickets on sale Monday.

The Dates Are Set: Phoenix Theatre, March 2027

The wait for details on Quentin Tarantino's first stage play is over. According to Variety, "The Popinjay Cavalier," written and directed by Tarantino and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, will hold previews at London's Phoenix Theatre from Feb. 23, with opening night set for March 18, 2027, and a run currently booking through June 13. Playbill confirms the schedule, reporting performances begin Feb. 23 ahead of the March 18 opening. The play, set in 1830s Europe, is billed by its producers as "a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen," and marks the first work Tarantino has written specifically for the stage.

Tickets Go On Sale Monday, Starting at £25

Theatergoers will not have to wait long to act. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. BST on Monday via the play's website, with Variety reporting a starting price of just £25. Playbill adds that priority registration runs at popinjayplay.com before general sales follow at noon BST the same day.

Why a Tarantino Stage Debut Is a Genuine First

The surprise here is not just that a famous filmmaker is trying theater — it is that this is Tarantino's first major stage writing credit. Playbill notes that as a performer he made his Broadway debut in a 1998 revival of Frederick Knott's "Wait Until Dark," but "The Popinjay Cavalier" appears set to become his first major credit as a stage writer and director. The BBC adds context: Tarantino has long said he plans to retire from filmmaking after ten features, and he has made nine, counting the Kill Bill volumes together. He told the Church of Tarantino podcast the play was "all written" and could occupy a year and a half to two years of his life, saying he is "preparing for it to be a success."

Baron Cohen Steps Into the Title Role

Sacha Baron Cohen makes his West End and professional stage debut in the title role, per Playbill, which notes his theater-adjacent résumé includes playing Signor Adolfo Pirelli in the 2007 film version of Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd." Both stars leaned into the occasion with characteristically colorful statements. Tarantino said he is "keen with anticipation to give the West End a great night out," while Baron Cohen quipped that when Quentin called, "I said yes before he even got to say his first 'motherfxxxer'" and joked the pair would be "losing our West End virginity together." Producers Tom Rothman of Sony Pictures and Sonia Friedman called Baron Cohen "a fearless, brilliantly inventive actor with the wit, mischief and daring this role demands."

The Producers and the Creative Machine Behind It

The production pairs Sony Pictures Entertainment — which distributed Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" — with Sonia Friedman Productions, whose hits the BBC lists as "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" and "Paddington the Musical." Rothman and Friedman said hearing Tarantino's "delicious language come alive" in the rehearsal room, alongside actors, fencers, acrobats and musicians, has been extraordinary. The creative team, as catalogued by Theatre Weekly, includes Tom Pye on scenic and costume design, Natasha Chivers on lighting, Ian Dickinson on sound, Philip d'Orleans as fight director, Sam Lyon-Behan as action coordinator, composer Tim Phillips and casting director Jim Carnahan. Further casting is still to be announced at a later date.

What Comes Next for Tarantino's Stage Bet

The stakes are unusually high for a debut play. The BBC reports Tarantino told the Church of Tarantino podcast that if the show succeeds he may stage a tour version, and that he would "more than likely move to England" with his family while working on it. The Independent notes poster artwork for the production has been painted by James Paterson, and the run is currently booking through June 13, 2027, giving the production a defined window to prove itself. For West End watchers, the next milestones are Monday's on-sale and the announcement of the full cast — with previews just over four months away, the production's commercial test arrives faster than most premieres of this scale.
