Airtel Money fell to £1.93 below its £1.96 offer price on debut, despite a heavily oversubscribed $7 billion IPO that was London's largest in a year.

A muted debut for London's biggest listing

Airtel Money began conditional trading on the London Stock Exchange on Friday and quickly slipped below its offer price. After rising as much as 2% to touch £2.00 in early dealings, the stock eased to £1.93–£1.94, just under the £1.96 IPO price, in what Reuters described as a muted start for the sub-Saharan Africa-focused mobile money service. The offering was several times oversubscribed, making the soft open a surprise against that demand backdrop. The listing is London's largest since Fermi's dual listing in September 2025, according to Dealogic data cited by both Reuters and etmarkets.com.

A $703 million secondary sale, not a fundraise

The deal raised about $703 million through the sale of 270 million existing shares at a fixed £1.96 each, valuing the business at roughly $7 billion, or a £5.3 billion market cap. etmarkets.com notes it was a secondary sale, so proceeds went to selling shareholders rather than the company, with an additional 27 million shares available under an over-allotment option. The International Finance Corporation committed to buy up to £67.2 million of shares as a cornerstone investor, anchoring the deal at a time when several European and US issuers have delayed offerings. Unconditional trading is expected on October 14.

The parent takes a hit amid telecom selloff

Airtel Africa, which held nearly 78% of Airtel Money before the IPO and will remain the majority shareholder, saw its own London-listed shares fall 6% on Friday. Reuters attributes that drop to a broad telecoms selloff after SpaceX acquired spectrum in the US, raising new competitive concerns for the sector. AJ Bell's head of markets Dan Coatsworth noted Airtel Money was one of the most popular London IPOs ever among retail investors on its platform, and pointed out Airtel Africa has returned 262% since its 2019 debut to reach £11.2 billion in value — a record many retail holders hoped the spin-off would repeat.

Stakes for the UK listings revival

The debut is a test case for Britain's effort to revive its listings market after a decade in which companies chased higher valuations abroad and London's stock market shrank, prompting simplified listing rules. Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, called the listing a "vote of confidence in the UK as an attractive global destination for investment," per Reuters.
