The webtoon with 2.97 billion views is becoming a TV anime in 2027, as Crunchyroll's NYCC panel also unveiled a 15-title webtoon partnership.

Crunchyroll Unveils the Empress at NYCC

At New York Comic Con on Thursday, Crunchyroll announced a television anime adaptation of HereLee and SUMPUL's webtoon *The Remarried Empress*, itself based on Alphatart's original web novel, per Anime News Network. The series is set to air in 2027, with TROYCA animating the project. A teaser trailer and character visuals for all four leads were unveiled alongside the news, and Anime Trending notes Crunchyroll debuted an English-subtitled version of the trailer during its showcase panel. Animehunch reports that Alphatart, HereLee and SUMPUL shared newly drawn illustrations and handwritten messages to celebrate the adaptation.

The Cast Behind Navier, Heinrey, Sovieshu and Rashta

The main cast, confirmed by multiple outlets, stars Yōko Hikasa as Empress Navier, Ryōhei Kimura as Heinrey, Tomoaki Maeno as Emperor Sovieshu, and Reina Ueda as Rashta. The staff, as detailed by Anime Trending and Anime News Network, includes Tetsuya Yanagisawa (*Berserk of Gluttony*, *High School DxD*) directing, Akiko Inoue (*An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess*) supervising and writing the series scripts, Jun Nakai (*GATE*, *NieR:Automata Ver1.1a*) on character design, and Yūki Fukazawa composing the music. The story follows Navier, the perfect Empress of the Eastern Empire, who chooses divorce when her husband plans to replace her with his mistress — and resolves to become an Empress in another land.

Why a 2.97 Billion-View Webtoon Matters

Anime Trending traces the franchise's origins to a web novel Alphatart serialized from November 2018 to March 2020, followed by the Sumpul-drawn webtoon that launched on Naver Webtoon in October 2019 — a run that ended this January after seven years, though ANN reports it will return this fall with side stories. Eleven physical volumes exist as of August 2026, per Anime Trending.

Inside the Crunchyroll–HAYATE–WEBTOON Pipeline

The announcement is only the flagship of something larger. Inven Global reports that LINE Digital Frontier, the Japanese affiliate of NAVER WEBTOON, has entered a partnership with anime production company HAYATE and Crunchyroll to co-produce webtoon-based anime, cooperating from the planning stage with the goal of adapting around 15 titles; HAYATE was jointly established by Aniplex and Crunchyroll in 2025. Se7en.ws identifies the first three titles as *The Remarried Empress*, *Teenage Mercenary*, and *The Boxer*, with Crunchyroll streaming the results exclusively in select territories. Solo Leveling's success proved these properties can travel, which is why Sony's ecosystem is stepping in directly.

Not the Only Adaptation Coming

Fans won't wait until 2027 for the story alone: Animehunch reports a live-action television adaptation is scheduled to premiere in November 2026, and Anime News Network details that the live-action series hits Disney+ and Hulu on November 4, with two new episodes every Wednesday through the finale on November 25 — ten episodes in total. Meanwhile, Inven Global adds staff detail on the companion announcements: *Teenage Mercenary* airs in 2027 with Manabu Ono directing and Hiroyuki Sawano composing at J.C.STAFF, while *The Boxer* will be co-produced by Japanese studio breccia and Korea's STUDIO JEMI.

What Comes Next

There's a reader hook already live: Animehunch reports LINE Manga is holding a campaign offering 20 free chapters of the webtoon from October 9 through October 15 to commemorate the anime announcement. The English digital version is available on WEBTOON, and Ize Press is releasing the series in print, per Anime News Network.
