Samsung has reportedly asked suppliers to cut Q4 smartphone production by 20-30% as soaring DRAM prices squeeze its mobile business toward break-even.

Samsung asks suppliers to slash Q4 output

Samsung has reportedly instructed its Mobile eXperience division's suppliers to reduce smartphone component shipments by 20% to 30% in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to a report from Korean outlet Money Today picked up by multiple technology publications. The move comes as surging memory prices make many phone models difficult to sell profitably, with one industry source cited in the report describing Samsung smartphones as currently generating no profit when sold. The company has not officially confirmed the cuts.

Why making fewer phones makes financial sense

The counterintuitive logic is that producing more devices amplifies losses when each unit barely makes money. Memory costs are the core problem: TrendForce data cited in the reports shows 12GB LPDDR5X mobile DRAM crossed $145 in the second quarter, a 175% increase from a year earlier, and SammyGuru reports prices reached around $180 in recent weeks.

Full-year shipments could fall far below target

Samsung was previously expected to produce around 270 million smartphones in 2026, but Android Central reports the cuts could push that total into the early 200-million range. SammyGuru, citing IDC estimates, reports shipments of about 184 million units through the first three quarters — 62.4 million in Q1, 62.7 million in Q2 and 59 million in Q3 — suggesting full-year shipments may land between 220 million and 230 million units, roughly 18% below initial projections. In 2025 Samsung produced about 240 million phones, on par with Apple as the world's biggest maker by volume.

The seasonal drop is bigger than normal

Some fourth-quarter slowdown is routine, since buyers typically wait for the next Galaxy S flagship that launches early in the following year. TechJuice notes Samsung normally produces fewer phones in this window ahead of the flagship cycle. But Tech Times reports IDC had forecast only a roughly 12% output decline, from about 59 million units in Q3 to around 52 million in Q4, while the reported 20% to 30% cut in component orders is considerably more aggressive — even a best-case 30% reduction would bring Q4 output to around 36 million units.

AI demand is squeezing the phone business

The root cause is the AI boom. Tech Times explains that data-center demand for high-performance memory is driving up DRAM prices across the industry, creating an unusual internal tension for Samsung: its semiconductor division benefits from stronger memory pricing while its smartphone division pays more for the components inside Galaxy devices. Analyst consensus reportedly places Samsung Electronics' overall operating profit at about 106.64 trillion won, yet Tech Times reports one securities firm estimates the mobile division could record a loss of around 19 trillion won.

What it means for buyers and what comes next

For consumers, the reported cuts could mean fewer low-margin models, higher prices, and an even stronger focus on Samsung's premium Galaxy lineup. Samsung has not confirmed the production reductions, so the coming months will show whether this is a temporary adjustment tied to memory pricing or a lasting shift toward making fewer, more profitable phones. Until more concrete data arrives, the figures remain industry reports rather than confirmed company statements.
