Lena Dunham says the revived 'Girls' characters began talking to her near her 40th birthday, as production heads to 2027 with the core cast.
Dunham says the characters 'started talking to me in the shower'
According to the Lewiston Tribune, citing the Associated Press, Lena Dunham explained in a statement that she and HBO always said they would only return to *Girls* if there was a specific story they were burning to tell — and for a long time she couldn't picture the characters in the present day.
Then, she says, right around her fortieth birthday, they started talking to her in the shower, and once the fivesome starts talking it is hard to get them to stop.
Dunham, now 40, will again play aspiring writer Hannah, joined by Allison Williams as Marnie, Jemima Kirke as Jessa, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna and Andrew Rannells as Elijah, with Judd Apatow back as executive producer.
No mention of Adam Driver — the revival's loudest question
The announcement makes no mention of Adam Driver returning, the Lewiston Tribune notes — a striking omission given that, as that report recounts, Driver became the show's biggest star, headlining a Star Wars trilogy and earning two Oscar nominations.
The revival is also among the first production announcements HBO has made since parent company Warner Bros. Discovery was taken over by Skydance-owned Paramount, which the report frames as an early signal of the new ownership's slate priorities.
Production begins in 2027, ten years after the finale of the six-season, 2012–2017 run that was nominated for 19 Emmys and won two.
A lightning rod whose stock has risen with Gen Z
Per the Lewiston Tribune, *Girls* was both a touchstone and a lightning rod for its depiction of millennial young women in New York, with vocal haters often louder than its many devotees — but affection for it has surged in the decade since, especially among younger viewers who see it as aspirational as well as endlessly quotable and meme-able.
The report also notes Dunham kept working without matching its impact, directing 2022's *Catherine Called Birdy* and co-creating *Camping* and *Too Much*, while Williams built a horror profile with *Get Out* and two *M3GAN* movies.
Hannah's 'voice of my generation — or at least a voice of a generation' line remains among its most repeated.
What comes next: 2027 production in a crowded TV fortnight
With cameras not rolling until 2027, the revival arrives as a promise rather than a program, and the Lewiston Tribune's report offers no episode count beyond the five-episode limit or a premiere window beyond production year.
Meanwhile, The Tab reports that The Celebrity Traitors' season two finale airs October 30 at 8pm, running 80 minutes — the longest episode in the show's international history — with Uncloaked following until 10pm, and that episodes air Thursdays and Fridays.
For television fans, the *Girls* news sets up the next decade's reunion conversation while this month's finales fill the immediate diary.
