Jon Stewart signed a two-year deal to host and executive produce 'The Daily Show' through December 2028, Skydance announced.

The Deal That Ends the Speculation

Skydance Television announced Monday that Jon Stewart will continue hosting Comedy Central's 'The Daily Show' every Monday and serving as executive producer through December 2028, per the Los Angeles Times.

The two-year extension takes Stewart's once-a-week perch through the 2028 presidential election, and CNN reports it is his longest extension since returning to the program, following two successive one-year renewals that had his contract set to expire at the end of this year.

Why It's a Surprise After the Colbert Ax

The announcement lands amid real uncertainty.

CNN notes viewers wondered whether Stewart might be next to be canceled after CBS ended 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' — a show Stewart executive produced and whose cancellation he harshly criticized, accusing Paramount of bending the knee to the president.

Deadline reports the deal should quiet critics concerned that David Ellison and company would cancel the political comedy show, and comes amid financial and political scrutiny of late-night television.

The Ratings and Social Evidence

The franchise's numbers back the retention. The Los Angeles Times reports 'The Daily Show' hit an eight-year high in viewing during the third quarter of 2026 according to Nielsen data, and that Comedy Central said the program accrued 1.6 billion views across social media in 2026.

USA Today adds the show won two Emmy Awards in 2026, and Variety reports it is the most-viewed cable program across social media in 2026, per metrics provided by Paramount.

The Political Stakes of Stewart Staying

CNN frames the renewal as meaning one of television's most prominent critics of President Donald Trump stays in place for the rest of Trump's term, noting Comedy Central is a cable network not subject to FCC authority — unlike ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, whom Trump and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr have threatened to pull off the air, per the Los Angeles Times.

Deadline also observes Stewart is once again under the same corporate umbrella as his former colleague John Oliver, who signed a one-year deal through the end of 2027 after the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.

The Rotating Bench Behind Stewart

The structure stays the same through 2028. Rolling Stone reports correspondents Ronny Chieng, Josh Johnson, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta and Desi Lydic will continue rotating anchoring duties Tuesdays through Thursdays, with Troy Iwata and Grace Kuhlenschmidt as non-hosting correspondents.

Deadline says Stewart remains an executive producer alongside showrunner Jen Flanz and his manager James Dixon, and Rolling Stone notes Lydic won Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series at this year's Creative Arts Emmys for 'The Daily Show: Desi Lydic Foxsplains.'

What Comes Next for Skydance's Late Night

CNN calls the extension one of the first major programming announcements from the newly enlarged Skydance, formed when Paramount Skydance acquired Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this month.

Skydance TV co-chair and chief content officer George Cheeks said in a statement that 'Jon Stewart is a generational talent' and the show 'continues to be one of the most influential franchises on television and a cornerstone of Comedy Central.'

With Stewart now locked through the next election and the show airing weeknights at 11 p.m. ET, episodes also stream the following day on Paramount+, per USA Today.
